Primary Purpose of Position:

The Mechanical Engineer position is the lead program manager for UNC Charlotte’s mechanical systems. These systems include all campus HVAC systems (campus infrastructure and building systems), building automation systems, building plumbing systems, and building fire protection systems. The Mechanical Engineer will support project management by developing and enforcing campus design & construction standards, reviewing drawings for compliance to campus standards, and being the chief liason for Maintenance Operations’ RUP & HVAC shops within project areas. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with the Energy Manager and BAS shop to ensure a high standard of building performance.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment and six years engineering experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Provide subject matter expertise within Facilities Management in areas of long range planning for mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, HVAC controls/BAS and fire protection systems and develop consensus for those plans.
2. Develop and manage program/project plan.
3. Provide consultation on issues and requests from clients.
4. Consult with higher-level professionals to discuss alternative solutions.
5. Supervise teams to include any specialized IMT teams if necessary.
6. Develop and implement short-term strategies consistent with agency/University goals.
7. Attend construction project meetings, perform design review, walk construction sites and provide recommendations to project management team.
8. Manage mechanical divisions UNC Charlotte’s design and construction guidelines.
9. Apply thorough expertise and understanding of concepts, practices, and theories used in the technical specialty area.
10. Serve as technical expert while accomplishing assigned task independently.
11. Apply thorough knowledge of state building codes for specific program area to ensure compliance, provide guidance and provide interpretation.
12. Present detailed technical information, guidelines and standards to seek compliance and approval.
13. Apply basic concepts, practices, and theories involved in the development, review and permitting of construction, or repair projects, and understand their potential environmental and safety impacts.
14. Review and identify significant deviations from the plans and discuss them with all parties concerned; keep supervisor informed of findings. Oversee and review as necessary contractor work to assure compliance with plans, specifications, and documented variations.
15. Provide engineering support for critical systems such as campus labs, cleanrooms, infrastructure and regional utility plants.

9. Present projects and recommendations to advisory committees or other large groups as required.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Professional registration as an Engineer in North Carolina or the ability to obtain one within three years of start date.

Knowledge of building mechanical systems including HVAC, Controls, Plumbing and Fire Protection.

Knowledge of design and construction process.

Ability to communicate and foster a team relationship within and outside of Engineering.

Mechanical engineering experience.

Knowledge of critical systems.

Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation and comprehension).

Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to work/interact effectively with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.

Ability to create/foster an atmosphere of teamwork.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications:

Position is contingent on selected candidate obtaining their professional engineering licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors within three years of start date.
