The University of Virginia Facilities Management Landscape Services department is seeking a Landscape Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day activities of multiple staff members assigned to one out of our seven Landscape Maintenance Zones. Landscape Supervisors are responsible for ensuring the portion of Grounds under their supervision is maintained to the level called for by our Landscape Management Plan. This is accomplished through continuous inspections, assigning of landscape activities to staff, and coordinating other routine, corrective and renewal projects with other members of the department. This position supports Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost effective, and reliable maintenance and service to University Grounds.

Duties Include:

  • Inspect Grounds to identify and prioritize tasks, assign those tasks to the crews, and provide feedback to those crews upon completion of the assigned tasks.
  • Plan, schedule, and perform human resource functions including hiring and performance evaluations.
  • Prepare estimates of labor, material, and machine costs.
  • Foster a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of policies, procedures, and safety practices including participation in OSHA required workplace safety programs.
  • Maintain accurate daily records of all requested and completed work through the use of both computer and mobile applications.
  • Oversees all activities involving the installation, fertilization, pest control, weed control, and mowing of all turf associated with all Academic spaces, Housing and Student Life, UVA Health, public spaces associated with our Athletic facilities, plus additional service areas.
  • Supervisees the day-to-day activities of 11 full-time staff members to ensure the University’s turf is healthy and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Oversees the support provided by Business Partners contracted to provide weekly mowing services on Grounds.
  • Ensures compliance with the State Nutrient Management Plan.
  • Coordinates collection of leaves from Grounds.
  • Coordinates team efforts relating to snow and ice removal.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: A minimum of four [4] years of relevant Landscaping experience. Extensive landscape experience preferred. One [1] year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Licensure:
    --Valid VA driver's license.
-- Must acquire a Virginia Registered Tech Pesticide Applicators Certification within nine [9] months of hire.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $22.50 - $24.25 per hour ($46,800 - $50,440 per annum).

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the necessary background checks prior to their start date.

Physical Demands:

This job will require standing, traveling, and lifting above and below the waist various weights which may include different landscape equipment and materials. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while pruning, driving, weeding, and pushing lawn mowers.
