COVID-19 has magnified the life challenges of the students and families that we support. The Netter Center has learned, via supporting our partner schools' spring virtual and COVID-19 impacted programming, that a range of issues (illness and death in families, connectivity to the Internet, students working extended hours to support families, students needing to supervise younger siblings, and food insecurity, for example) have emerged to challenge student engagement. Accordingly, it is even more critical to be responsive to Pipeline students’ academic and social needs as we have an increased need for ongoing contact with Pipeline students.
EDUCATIONAL PIPELINE PROGRAM
The mission of the Educational Pipeline Program is to encourage high school students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine to aspire to medical science careers. The Netter Center for Community Partnerships, the Perelman School of Medicine, and Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine collaborate to provide mentorship and education at all levels:
- High school students are taught by undergraduates and graduate students
- Undergraduates learn from graduate students
- Graduate students are guided by faculty
The Pipeline Program allows college students, medical trainees, physicians-in-training, and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania to contribute meaningfully to our local community while simultaneously advancing teaching, learning and research at Penn.
Bachelor's Degree with 1-3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Demonstrated ability to: (a) establish strong collaborative working-relationships with school-based and university-based partners, (b) foster mentoring relationships with high school students, (c) recruit, organize, and support undergraduate students in school-based and research-hospital settings, (d) recruit and support high school students for program participation, (e) support year-round diverse programming and (f) create organizational structures to support programming as needed.
