A Systems Research Technician position is available in the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The position is within the U.S. Department of Energy-funded Bioenergy Research Center (BRC), the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation (CABBI). The mission of CABBI is to develop the scientific and technological basis for efficient and productive bioenergy crops, whose biomass can be converted into valuable bioproducts in an economically and ecologically sustainable fashion.

The laboratory technician will work with Dr. Wendy Yang to design, construct, and operate a stable isotope labeling facility for whole plant 13C- and 15N-labeling of highly productive bioenergy grasses in the greenhouse and field settings. This facility will enable targeted investigations of plant and microbial processes and their interactions through highly collaborative research across the CABBI Feedstock Production, Conversion, and Sustainability Themes. Career development for the laboratory technician will be supported through mentorship by Dr. Yang, participation in lab meetings and project meetings, and professional development opportunities at UIUC, including free coursework as non-degree students as permitted by work schedules.

The successful candidate will design, construct, and operate the CABBI Stable Isotope Labeling Facility. Duties will include:

  • constructing the labeling chambers
  • assembling and testing the instrumentation for monitoring and regulating carbon dioxide, humidity, and temperature in the labeling chambers
  • training and assisting facility users, and supervision of hourly employees
  • consulting with CABBI investigators to design the stable isotope labeling facility
  • ordering equipment and supplies for the facility
  • attending CABBI project meetings

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: Required: A bachelor’s degree in agricultural and biological engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, biology, environmental science, chemistry, or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on depth and breadth of experience and skills as related to this position.

Experience: Required: A minimum of one year experience in a research lab.

Preferred: Direct experience with designing, assembling, and programming automated instrumentation such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or Campbell Scientific systems. Basic experience with computer programming. Some research, course, or work experience with plant, microbial, or environmental sciences.

Training, Licenses or Certifications: None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Required: High level of self-motivation; Enthusiasm for learning new skills; Ability to work independently and in a large collaborative team environment; Strong organizational skills

Preferred: Working knowledge of electronic multiplexers, solenoid valves, thermostats, thermoelectric coolers, gas analyzers, and pneumatic systems. Knowledge and skills for fabricating and modifying components using hand and power tools.

Environmental Demands: Manual dexterity- Bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting may be involved.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications

Appointment Status: Full-time academic professional, grant-supported appointment renewable annually pending continued funding and satisfactory progress within the positin.
