Registered Nurse – Electroconvulsive Therapy Program (ECT) - Duke Behavioral Health Center

Duke University Health System- Duke Health seeks to hire per diem experienced Registered Nurse who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together.

Department Profile:ECT Procedural Unit

Patient Population: Adults suffering from severe major depression, other psychiatric disorders, who may also have serious medical conditions that may be admitted to Intensive Care Unit or Medical Specialty Units.

Shift: Monday – Wednesday – Friday (0630-1500) may vary depending on census.

ECT schedule is 6:30am till 3:30pm Monday , Wednesday and Friday with some flexibility needed to come in earlier or stay later depending on patient volumes.

Part-time Registered Nurse (0.1 FTE) needed to provide services to inpatients and outpatients with high medical and psychiatric acuity receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). This is a per diem position which requires a commitment to provide availability to work at least 2-3 shifts per MWF (week). Scheduling is done by self- governance model. Flexibility is needed in scheduling of shifts to meet the needs of the unit.

Duties include preparation of patients, assistance with ECT procedure and recovery.

Knowledge of pre and post perioperative care physiologic monitoring devices needed. Prior knowledge of dysrhythmias, cardio-pulmonary assessments, IV skills, and phlebotomy, knowledge of anesthetics agents and adjunct medications, and rescue medications used with ECT treatments is strongly preferred. Nurses who have a background in perioperative, medical, surgical, emergency, ICU with an appreciation and yearning to learn psychiatry highly desired.

ECT schedule is 6:30am till 3:30pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday with some flexibility needed to come in earlier or stay later depending on patient volumes.

May also have to provide assistance with monitoring the emotional and physical symptoms; ensure safety through assessments of the patient and the environment; and report on the patient's behavioral progress. Additionally, nursing care includes assessing and monitoring patients for signs and symptoms of social withdrawal, need for emotional support during stressful events, as well as improvement from the treatment.

Additional roles include patient and family education about the ECT procedure, pre-procedure and post-procedure care. Participate in providing reports to Nursing, Psychiatric and Anesthesia personnel on the psychiatric and medical status of patients with regards to physiologic, psychiatric, airway/cardiac precautions in a high volume patient procedural setting. Other duties may include performance improvement projects, weekly rounds, and team building activities.

As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere. The Clinical Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities. Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department. Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

Previous work experience (1+ years) as a clinical nurse is required.Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

· Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.

· BLS (or higher) certification required. ACLS needed. ·Professional specialty certification (preferred).
