Description of Work:

The primary purpose of the Veterinary Technician is to function effectively as a member of a team of professionals to provide veterinary care to research animals. Responsibilities will include inspecting research animals housed by UNC, monitoring the health status of research animals, and evaluate and implement a diagnosis and treatment plan for sick or injured animals. The employee will participate in collecting biological samples on a variety of species and provide routine care, such as vaccinations and parasite control. The employee will be required to keep detailed and accurate records of health evaluations and surgical procedures. The employee will participate in the training of investigators and students in anesthetic procedures and other procedures as necessary. Responsibilities may also include working in the area of the rodent health-monitoring program and performing various diagnostic procedures. Emergency duties required during adverse weather and/or other emergency situations. Weekend, on-call, and holiday work required occasionally on a rotating basis.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Must have a demonstrated ability to work well with others. Requires a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate. Requires a demonstrated ability to follow a set work schedule. Must be comfortable with being around animals when they are euthanized. Emergency duties required during adverse weather and/or other emergency situations. Weekend, on-call, and holiday work required occasionally on a rotating basis.
