Position Summary:

The Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) brings together collaborative, multidisciplinary teams of scholars and community members to improve health in underserved communities through a shared commitment to health equity, innovation, and translational research. The Center’s vision is to create and maintain cross-disciplinary synergy: The combination of individual perspectives, resources, and skills creates a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts and results in research collaborations with increased creativity and more comprehensive solutions to complex problems. The Center does this through advancing research methods, effectively translating research discoveries, conducting research that addresses patient and community-centered outcomes, and viewing equity in health care as an issue of quality.

The Associate Director of Operations position will be within Abacus, the program evaluation and research consultancy within CHER. Abacus specializes in collaborating with health and human service organizations with a mission to foster innovation and advance equity in research and health outcomes through evaluation. Dr. Dave, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Associate Director of CHER, is the Director of Abacus. Abacus’ leadership consists of experienced evaluators who maintain currency with state-of-art research and evaluation methodologies. Abacus evaluators use various quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches to address the research and evaluation questions identified in its portfolio of projects. The Associate Director of Operations position will primarily lead the overall management and administrative direction of all aspects of Abacus and its projects. This position will be responsible for directing the daily operations of Abacus and its evaluation support services. Duties and responsibilities include formulating policies and procedures, managing day-to-day operations, and planning the use of resources and personnel.
The Associate Director of Operations will coordinate all operations and oversee all administrative activities for Abacus, a new research service center at UNC, within the Center for Health Equity Research. Key activities of this position include, but are not limited to: ensuring effective use of project management tools and coordination of multiple cross-functional teams; monitoring the progress and performance of projects to ensure the quality of provided services; ensuring and facilitating timeliness of deliverables, compliance with regulatory requirements, and adherence to financial targets; determining and managing financial resource requirements for multiple projects; overseeing hiring and organizational development processes; and other duties, as required.

Educational Requirements:

Minimum of a Master’s degree in public health, social sciences, or related field, or Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience and highly advanced operations knowledge. PhD preferred.

Qualifications and Experience:

Ability to manage operations within a complex, multi-functional research environment. Experience in a project and personnel management capacity. Supervisory experience in managing team dynamics, performance, and timely completion of deliverables in teams. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to plan the work of others and to work collaboratively with a variety of individuals. Experience developing and managing budgets. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to establish and implement strategies for organizational improvement. Prefer candidates who have a research background/experience in social research and evaluation.
