Department Description:

The Department of Neurosurgery provides treatment for aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease, brain tumors, epilepsy, spine and head trauma, hydrocephalus and pituitary tumors. The Department offers skull base and spinal neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery and deep brain stimulation surgery. The Department is committed to participation in team science and partners with leading researchers throughout the UNC Chapel Hill campus and with research partners around the state and country. The Department also educates residents and UNC medical students with a curriculum that includes access to a surgical simulation training lab, the Miracles in Sight Surgical Skills Laboratory. The Miracles in Sight Surgical Skills Laboratory brings together the Departments of Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. The lab is a 3,800 square foot facility with sixteen surgical skills stations and an additional three spine specific stations. The stations are fully integrated with a high definition camera and sound system. There is an array of specialty-specific equipment available to further enhance both internal and external learner experiences.

Position Description:

This position will manage all aspects of the lab, to include training needs assessment and the identification of new training opportunities, design and delivery of training events, facilitating surgical skills training sessions, evaluation of training effectiveness, equipment maintenance and tracking financials and capital equipment purchases. This position will also manage storage, maintenance, and safe handling of biological specimens used in the lab. The Training Specialist will deliver educational activities in the lab.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to lead and guide others to develop new skills or knowledge that will enhance their work. Ability to design, develop and/or deliver training programs. Ability to communicate information to individuals or groups and deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Ability to clearly and concisely convey written information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others. Ability to communicate and discuss training needs with individuals at all levels to assess skill levels and training needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with the operation, maintenance and service procedures for surgical equipment. Familiarity with the legal requirements for safe handling, tracking, and disposal of cadaveric specimens. Experience in a clinical training setting is highly preferred. Certification as Certified Simulation Healthcare Educator (CHSE) or Certified Healthcare
Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) or eligible preferred.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements:

Must be able to lift/move 50 lbs. and move 100 lbs, climb ladders, stairs, bend and stoop. May require evening and/or weekend work on occasion.
