Department Description:

The organizational unit is Dr. Matthew Wolfgang’s laboratory in the Cystic Fibrosis/ Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center. This unit is a research laboratory that conducts experiments and contributes to basic science & clinical studies aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms utilized by bacterial pathogens to cause respiratory disease for the purpose of developing new antimicrobial therapies. The CF center itself is seeking to define the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary disorders and to understand the functions and regulation of ion channels, primarily in respiratory epithelium.

Position Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist in ongoing studies aimed at developing a murine model of chronic airway infection. Responsibilities include handling and testing of clinical isolates for phenotypic characterization, preparing bacteria for infection and following them throughout a longitudinal study, and adaptation of protocols for complex research projects. In addition, the position will involve training other lab members in relevant techniques. Responsibilities include maintaining study related databases, inventory control, equipment maintenance, ensuring laboratory safety and generating progress reports and data summaries.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Essential skills include, general culture-based microbiology techniques, genomic library preparation, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, biofilm and persister killing assays, handling and processing animal tissues, enumeration of bacteria from tissue samples, and aseptic technique. Essential knowledge includes, basic bacteriology, murine models, laboratory safety requirements. Essential abilities, multitasking, adapting to and meeting deadlines, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, scientific writing and poster presentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in a health sciences field. Familiarity with government and private contract-based research. Experience with clinical and environmental microbes.
