About the Department:

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Engineering. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

Essential Job Duties:

  • This Extension Associate position will be responsible for managing projects within the realm of green infrastructure and storm-water management. Initial responsibilities will include (1) assisting with data analysis for multiple green infrastructure projects, (2) engineering design for multiple storm-water projects across North Carolina, (3) work with property owners and contractors to facilitate installation of storm-water control measures, (4) mentor MS students.
  • The incumbent will assist with grant writing and publication preparation and submission. They will work within a team of on- and off-campus faculty and project partners. They are expected to liaise with faculty from other departments at NC State University. They will assist with graduate student supervision and team-teach multiple extension and outreach events.
  • The position requires travel in- and out-of-state travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Biological/Agricultural Engineering or Civil/Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
  • At least one degree in engineering (Biological/Agricultural or Civil/Environmental Engineering, etc.)

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in GIS, AutoCAD, spreadsheets, word processing, PowerPoint (or similar), and simple water quality and hydrology models is needed.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • A statistical background is essential.
  • The candidate must be able to work in teams of campus and field faculty and he/she must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Delivering presentations at workshops will be an important aspect of the job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biological/Agricultural Engineering or Civil/Environmental Engineering.
  • Experience in field data collection and management, working with municipal partners, AutoCAD or GIS, storm-water practice design, multi-tasking, journal article preparation, and statistical analysis.
  • Familiarity with monitoring equipment and operation is recommended.
  • A proven peer-refereed publication record and proposal acquisition records is encouraged.
  • Academic background in applied storm-water research and/or design.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

  • A valid NC drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 30 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • The person must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (EI designate).
