The NC State Office of General Counsel provides, manages and coordinates all legal services for the university in a collegial, responsive and professional manner. The office provides legal and risk management advice on a wide variety of matters to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, senior officers, other university administrators, and faculty and staff who are acting on behalf of the university. These matters include, but are not limited to, employment, student affairs, athletics, public records, real property, sponsored programs, intellectual property, purchasing and civil rights. The office represents the university in administrative proceedings before federal and state agencies and coordinates all litigation matters.Essential Job Duties:
The person selected for this position will engage in a wide-ranging, intellectually challenging, fast-paced and demanding practice. Practice areas will focus on general higher education legal issues as needed with a particular focus on one or more of the following: general litigation, compliance, administrative agency complaints, public records law, student affairs, employment, Title IX, ADA, Clery Act compliance, FERPA, HIPAA, IT and data security and privacy, general transactional matters, and/or risk management matters.
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Providing legal advice and counsel in matters relating to the areas listed above coordinating with and assisting outside counsel on litigation matters
- Responding to administrative agency complaints
- Coordinating the university’s response to subpoenas
- Advising on compliance with North Carolina Public Records law
- Conducting legal research on complex issues, internal investigations and fact gathering
- Policy drafting and revision
- Developing procedures for handling and responding to litigation matters
The person selected may also be asked to assist in responding to government investigations and to advise on compliance related matters. The legal practice areas of this position may also expand to include supporting other attorneys in the office in various practice areas as needed, as well as handling other matters as determined by the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel.Other Responsibilities:

J.D. degree from an accredited law school
Excellent academic credentials
License to practice law in the State of North Carolina (or eligibility for admission within 12 months of hire)
At least 2 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience for the position of Assistant General Counsel.
At least 5 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience for the position of Associate General Counsel.Other Required Qualifications:
