About the Department:

The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.

The department provides learning opportunities within the four-year veterinary curriculum and through continuing education for practitioners. Within the Veterinary Hospital, faculty and staff provide care for patients, teach veterinary students, and provide advanced training for interns and residents.

Faculty are very active in research programs to improve the health and welfare of animals and people. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program allows graduate students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which departmental faculty are affiliated include programs in immunology, physiology, toxicology and functional genomics.

Essential Job Duties:

Primary duties of the Research Specialist include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Managing the day to day operations of the laboratory including, but not limited to the following:
    • Maintaining appropriate supply inventory,
    • Performing equipment performance and upkeep, and regulatory compliance, in order to permit timely and successful initiation and execution of planned experiments.
  • Providing oversight and training of student workers,
  • Coordinating and planning of clinical trials and experiments, including, but not limited to the follwing:
    • Assistance with study design;
    • maintenance of the neurology biobank;
    • Data presentation and analysis;
    • Support of graduate student and postdoctoral fellows’ research efforts.

Other Responsibilities:

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Computer skills vital – must be able to work with Microsoft office, specifically MS Excel.
  • Animal handling skills.
  • Previous experience in veterinary medicine.
  • Exemplary communication skills along with strong organizational skills.
  • Candidate must be meticulous, thorough, tenacious, and detail oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Veterinary technical experience.
  • DNA extraction and ELISA testing experience.
  • Data entry experience (working with Microsoft office).
  • Clinical trial experience.
