About the Department:

The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide NCSU faculty with optimal animal resources at the least practical cost. The term “animal resources” includes not only animal housing facilities, but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in laboratory animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use. LAR is responsible for assisting faculty in conducting animal experimentation in keeping with these standards and is committed to assuring the well-being of experimental animals while providing services that facilitate their humane and judicious use.

Essential Job Duties:

Clinical veterinarian for all animals kept in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) facility.

  • Evaluate new clinical cases, provide appropriate veterinary care for ongoing cases, maintain appropriate medical records, lead hands-on rounds for all clinical animal cases.
  • Conduct preventative medicine procedures and coordinate rodent health monitoring program.
  • Consult on husbandry, daily care and housing of research animals. Coordinate with CVM faculty to develop species-appropriate plans for veterinary care.
  • Supervision of Clinical Procedures Laboratory for Research Procedures and Veterinary Services.
  • Serve as a CVM representative on IACUC for reading and reviewing IACUC proposals.
  • Perform administrative responsibilities for the development of SOPs, animal adoptions, and environmental and health safety issues.
  • Assist with residency training of Laboratory Animal residents

Other Responsibilities:

  • Executes the duties under the Animal Welfare Act; prepare, maintain and oversee the institution’s assurances to the Public Health Service Office of Laboratory Animal Resources; assist with maintenance, and to the extent of necessary expansion of the institution’s AAALAC accreditation.
  • Serve as voting member of the NC State University IACUC. Working to solve difficult animal care and use matters, provide advice to the IACUC, the Institutional Official and the faculty and administration on animal care and use matters through the interpretation of the National Research Council’s Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Federation of Animal Science Societies Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural research and Teaching, the Act and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals as well as any other pertinent guidance available including direct personal experience.
  • Assist with regulatory compliance for the CVM Directors of LAR and the Teaching Animal Unit, the CALS Director of the Biological Resource Facility and the Manager of Farm Operations.
  • Serve as a point-person on external officials inspecting and auditing the program including; USDA APHIS, PHS-OLAW, AALAC and others.
  • Partner with IACUC members in the veterinary review and assessment of protocols submitted to the IACUCU for considerations.
  • Serve on the executive committee on animal care and use-a decision-making body charged with programmatic and resource matters.
  • Participate in departmental staff meetings.
  • Work with technician staff and students to mentor professional growth and development.

Minimum Education and Experience:

DVM (or equivalent degree) and eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty licensure) in the State of NC. Board certification or qualification in Laboratory Animal Medicine

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with pocket pets/laboratory rodents, companion animals, and/or large animals.
  • Team oriented and able to foster technician integration into animal treatment plans.
  • Serve as a mentor to staff and students in professionalism and a focus on customer service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference for candidates who have are ACLAM-eligible or have completed ACLAM certification
  • Previous experience or training with aquatic (fish, frog), avian, and other species for research.
  • Knowledge of geriatric animal maintenance within parameters of research needs.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine; eligible to obtain NC Veterinary Medical License.
  • Board certified or board eligible for American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Valid NC Driver’s license
