Laboratory Research Coordinator, Department of Neuroscience - Georgetown University Medical Center

Scientists in Georgetown's Department of Neuroscience participate in a wide array of research activities with a focus on understanding both the normal and injured nervous system. Its SAMP Lab (Sensory and Motor Plasticity) explores the extent to which brain organization depends on one's own sensory or motor experience - studying models of early-onset sensory and motor deprivation using behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques.

The Laboratory Research Coordinator for the SAMP Lab facilitates the work of lab members - graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research assistants - by assisting in the creation and maintenance of the lab's infrastructure, by supporting and performing research activities for the lab personnel, and by serving as an integral part of the intellectual environment of the lab and department. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Laboratory Research Coordinator has duties that include but are not limited to:

Research Project Participation

  • Carries out independent research projects, including experiment design, analysis, and communication - including creating stimuli and experimental protocols, collecting and analyzing data, writing up results for publication, and presenting findings at conferences
  • Assists with the research projects of students and postdocs.
  • Mentors at least 1 undergraduate research assistant.

Research Experiments Participation
  • Recruits and interacts with study participants.
  • Runs experiments in the lab (behavioral, fMRI), as well as online behavioral experiments - for example, Amazon Mechanical Turk.

Experimental Work Administration
  • Maintains lab records.
  • Handles participant reimbursements.
  • Uploads and organizes data.
  • Manages IRB documentation and reviews.

Lab Administration
  • Interacts with outside vendors.
  • Maintains of laboratory records and website.
  • Assists with coordinating lab meetings, conference trips and visits.
  • Assists in writing grant applications and reports.

Infrastructure Maintenance
  • Purchases and maintains lab equipment (including finri equipment, lab computers, and lab accounts on software).
  • Manages data storage.

  • Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science or related scientific field
  • Some research experience
  • Experience with scientific computing (MATLAB, Python, or R)
  • Ability to solve technical problems independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Some research experience

Preferred qualification

Experience with fMRI analyses
