The Child Care Center Teacher provides developmentally appropriate care and early education to children of Staff, Faculty, and Students of the University by:
- Creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children
- Conducting programs and activities that implement the emergent curriculum of the classroom.
- Developing and maintaining mutually supportive relationships with individual parents that enable both parents and teachers to meet each child's individual needs,
- Monitoring and supporting each child's individual development.
- Maintaining overall responsibility for classroom functioning.
All child care center staff and Georgetown University student assistants work with this position and report to the Director. This incumbent also partners with and interacts frequently with Faculty, Staff and students of the University, whose children they are caring for during the day. Reporting to the Director of Hoya Kids Learning Center, the Child Care Center Teacher has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
- Enforce health and safety rules with children as well as Assistant Teachers, aides, and parents, identifying and taking appropriate actions to eliminate unhealthy and unsafe conditions.
- Oversees classroom maintenance and assists with toileting routines, serve snacks and meals and maintain the Center's kitchens as needed.
- Demonstrates care and affection for each child, adhering to statutory, regulatory, licensing, and accreditation requirements.
- Correct existing or potential deficiencies within the classroom or center, or refer to the appropriate administrator as necessary, following up to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
- Transport up to 6 children in a manually operated buggy when needed.
- Identify, research, and expand upon children's interests and developmental needs.
- Prepare materials, supplies, and arrange classroom for planned activities.
- Create lesson plans/webs for each classroom, identifying problems with the lesson plans/webs.
- Maintain written records (webs and documentation panels) of the classroom activities and curriculum.
- Create relationships with families from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds to encourage 2- way communication.
- Provide verbal and written communication concerning each child's daily activities and development.
- Notify Director and Assistant Director of behaviors, incidents, progress, and problems that will be reported to parents, requesting assistance as appropriate.
- Communicate concerning behaviors, incidents, progress, and problems.
- Lead parent-teacher conferences biannually and as needed or requested.
- Respond to parents' requests for information about their children.
- Challenge each child to develop to his or her potential.
- Maintain written records and portfolios on each primary child's development and interests in the classroom.
- Write developmental narrative reports on primary children to prepare for bi-annual parent-teacher conferences.
- Oversee and review Assistant Teacher's reports.
- Identify and document any possible/potential developmental delays and/or behavioral issues.
- Communicate with other early childhood professionals such as specialists, therapists, and consultants.
- Consult with parents on parenting and/or child development issues.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field plus 1 year of supervised experience in a licensed child development center or the equivalent in education and experience per OSSE requirements: Bachelor's preferred
- Ability to pass numerous background checks and drug/alcohol testing as well as participate in Annual training requirements
- Strong relationship and communication skills
- Proficient knowledge and use of technology (email, calendar, internet, PowerPoint, google docs)
- Experience working in a high quality early childhood program
- Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification are desired, and required within 30 days of employment
- Ability to life children and materials up to 40 lbs and provide sight and sound supervision within classrooms, playgrounds, and outdoor (campus walks)
- Ability to walk on campus, lift boxes and moving furniture, and to be active with children (music and movement activities), sit on floor, and get on child's level (by stooping, squatting, or bending)
- Comfort with regular exposure to communicable illnesses, and bodily fluids
- Knowledge and application of Emergent Curriculum and experience documenting children's growth and development
- Ability to work well in a team as well as independently, communicate effectively and respectfully to children, families and colleagues, build positive relationships with all members of the GU community, demonstrate initiative to solve problems creatively, and show flexibility and open mindedness
