The Stanford University Occupational Health Center (SUOHC) was established in 2007 to care for the occupational health needs of Stanford University faculty and staff and is dedicated to providing outstanding clinical care to improve the health and safety of University employees. The SU and SLAC Occupational Health Centers are campus-based medical clinics that offer evaluation and treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses, work-related preventive medical services, and OSHA- and departmentally-mandated medical surveillance programs.

The Stanford University Occupational Health Center (SUOHC) is seeking a registered nurse (RN) with experience in workplace health, medical surveillance, and infection control. Working closely with our clinicians, the RN will leverage their skillset to provide medical surveillance for the Stanford University employees and support the health and safety of the Stanford campus community through various preventive, wellness, and injury response measures.

This benefited position will report to the Medical Director and will collaborate closely with the other supervising physicians, the clinical team in the Occupational Health Center, and specialists in Environmental Health & Safety.

  • Provide initial patient care and treatment for first aid and work-related injuries and illnesses.
  • Make preliminary diagnoses concerning a patient's injury or illness.
  • Clinically evaluate and manage work-related health conditions.
  • Perform medical histories, physical exams, lab evaluations, diagnosis, management, and treatment. Provide drugs and devices as prescribed.
  • Complete medical records and treatment reports for work-related injuries and illnesses. Oversee disability case management for workers' compensation claims, as performed by clinical staff.
  • Conduct medical surveillance examinations. Evaluate type and need for preventive care, testing, and monitoring as appropriate
  • Provide education, outreach, and counseling in wellness, risk reduction, and safety. Participate in review of medical surveillance protocols with medical director, revising or initiating protocols and programs as necessary.
  • Contribute to maintenance of medical records and worker's compensation and medical surveillance databases, ensuring accuracy of data.
  • Participate in the quality improvement process, including chart reviews and case management meetings with other departments and risk management. May support and contribute to implementation of health projects.
  • May supervise medical assistants and clinical nursing staff, as needed.


Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of State of California Workers' Compensation regulations and processes.
  • Proficiency with computers and using Microsoft Office Suite, internet, and email programs.
  • Written English skills to document examination observations, adverse reactions, and documentation required by regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate medical principles to individuals of all age groups and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information (verbal and written) with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to maintain individual study participant and overall study records.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with Stanford's colleagues and clients, and with external organizations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety, shown through communication of safety concerns, and use and promotion of safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.

Certifications and Licenses:

R.N. Certified as Nurse by California Board of Registered Nursing

  • Frequent, regular and recurring physical exertion, including standing, walking, twist/bend/stoop/squat/stretching.
  • Occasionally sitting, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts.
