Executive Director of External Relations and Marketing, Walsh School of Foreign Service Georgetown University

Executive Director of External Relations and Marketing, Walsh School of Foreign Service - Georgetown University

Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS), founded in 1919, is a premier school of international relations. At Georgetown's Washington, D.C. and Qatar campuses, SFS provides a rigorous education combining theory and practice and instills the values of service. The School's liberal arts undergraduate program, leading to the Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, includes a two-year required core curriculum followed by two years of multidisciplinary electives. Eight interdisciplinary graduate programs are designed to teach students to think, analyze and act with imagination, good judgment and compassion. The vision of the School is to contribute to global peace, prosperity and human well-being by educating future generations of world leaders and expanding the knowledge, understanding and values that will inform their leadership.

The Executive Director of External Relations and Marketing plans and directs a strategic and effective communications and external relations program for the School that increases stakeholder engagement and public interest in the School, and enhances the image of the School, and provides strategic leadership to the constituent academic units of the School on all matters relating to communications and external relations, with the aim of ensuring consistency and efficiency in the development and delivery of all communications and in engagement with stakeholders. They oversee the conceptualization and implementation of signature and/or stakeholder-focused events related to the School, including those efforts designed to follow up on the school's recent celebration of its centennial; and engage University officials to include the Office of the GU President, Chairs, Deans and Directors on matters pertaining to communications, marketing, and event planning for the school.

Reporting to the Dean, the Executive Director of External Relations and Marketing supervises the School's Director of Communications and the Director of Events, and has duties that include but are not limited to:

External Relations and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Plan and direct a strategic and effective alumni and external relations program for the School that increases stakeholder engagement and public interest in the School, and enhances the image of the School
  • As a member of the School's senior leadership team, play a key advisory role in developing strategies for those areas that impact stakeholder experience and engagement
  • Develop and implement a plan for increasing the involvement of stakeholders in the School's ongoing events
  • Leverage existing programs and build a network for stakeholders to engage with and connect to one another and the School through events and school communications
  • Evaluate and strengthen existing stakeholder engagement strategies, such as developing regional groups and events in target locations
  • Provide oversight and guidance on signature and/or stakeholder-focused School events
  • Elicit cooperation of SFS constituent academic units in consolidating stakeholder data and activities where appropriate
  • Work with the Dean as necessary on communications, messaging, and appearances, particularly with Board of Advisors or other Georgetown relationships
  • Act as liaison from the SFS Dean's Office to the Office of the GU President, Chairs, Deans and Directors on matters pertaining to communications, marketing, and event planning for the school


Communications and Marketing: Strategic Planning and Project Management
  • Plan and direct a strategic and effective communications program for the School that increases stakeholder engagement and public interest in the School, enhances the image of the School, and incorporates the vision and strategic priorities developed by the Dean
  • Develop in consultation with the Dean and other University stakeholders' communications and marketing strategies that advance the School's and University's major goals
  • Develop a robust communication strategy to keep stakeholders informed about what is happening at the School, and actively connected with one another and the School, including on key social media channels
  • Continually evaluate existing communications materials and ensure changes necessary to advance School goals
  • Ensure substantive content and consistency of message and branding in School publications and communications


Qualifications
  • Master's degree in public relations, communications, marketing, higher education administration, or related field
  • 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in communications and/or external relations, preferably in higher education
  • Supervisory experience and a broad and up-to-date understanding of communications and external relations strategies
  • Exceptional writing and presentational skills, a demonstrated ability to organize teams to achieve results, and the ability to quickly garner credibility and develop and maintain relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • High level of organizational competence and effective time management
  • Experience with fundraising preferred
