The Department of Neurology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking to recruit a dynamic leader to expand the clinical and research programs within our Epilepsy Section. Appointment will be at the level of Associate or Full Professor depending on qualifications. The individual will be the Associate Director of the Section, with anticipation that they will assume the Directorship as part of the section’s succession planning process. This is a Senior Leadership position within the Epilepsy Section and the candidate will initially be appointed as the Associate Section Chief with an expected transition to Section Chief as part of the section’s succession planning process. The position is located at the University of Colorado - Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) in Aurora, CO a suburb of Denver. The AMC is the site of University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, the University of Colorado Cancer Center, and the main research and educational facilities of the School of Medicine.

Section

This faculty position is in the Epilepsy Section, which currently has 12 Epileptologists, 5 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), and 2 Fellows (ACGME accredited), making it one of the largest sections in the Department of Neurology. The Epilepsy Section’s clinical activities include outpatient clinics, a continuous EEG monitoring service, and two Epilepsy Monitoring Units (one at UCH and a satellite unit at UCHealth’s Highlands Ranch Hospital in South Metro Denver). Epileptologists work closely with members of the Department of Neurosurgery in an active epilepsy surgery program. The outpatient clinics currently include both general epilepsy outpatient clinic as well as several multidisciplinary clinics at UCH including the Epilepsy pregnancy clinic, Tuberous Sclerosis clinic, Non-Epileptic Seizure clinic, Neuro-feedback clinic, Diet clinic, Neuro-modulation clinic, Pre-surgery clinic, Surgery clinic, and Tele-epilepsy. The Epileptologists and Epilepsy APPs rotate through and are responsible for staffing the Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMU) and inpatient continuous EEG monitoring service (cEEG). The UCH EMU is a National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) level 4 unit. A satellite EMU expansion was recently established at the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital in South Metro Denver that is also staffed by the Epilepsy Section on a rotational basis.

The section has an ACGME accredited epilepsy fellowship which accepts two fellows per year and plays a key role in resident and medical student education. The Department of Neurology has large basic science and clinical research programs, and candidates are expected to develop and maintain a personal research program and to develop and expand existing research in the section.   

 

Job Responsibilities

The duties in this faculty position will include clinical, teaching, research, and service responsibilities. The overall determination of research and clinical activities and allocation of time and effort will be subject to the determination of the Department Chair.

Clinical duties may include responsibilities at the faculty-level for outpatient clinics, continuous EEG monitoring, and attending in the EMUs. While on service, obligations will include supervision of medical students, residents, and some fellows, supervision of patient procedures, and teaching of the house-staff as well as students.

Teaching activities including attending neurology services, leading teaching conferences and training medical students, residents, and fellows.

It is anticipated that the candidate will have an active research interest that can include clinical research or basic research related to the field of epilepsy and will be able to help the section expand its research activities both through their own work and in mentoring and fostering the development of other section members.
 

Administrative responsibilities will include data entry into hospital systems, development of critical pathways, committee work and projects aimed at improving the specialty and department mission. It is assumed the bulk of this non-clinical time will be spent working toward the production of scholarship activities. Attendance at meetings and educational events of the department and specialty programs is expected. Other duties may be assigned as need arises.

 

The duties of the Associate Section Chief/Section Chief include:

    Serving as the Associate Section Chief/Section Chief for the Epilepsy Section operations of the Department of Neurology, which includes the ability to make executive and administrative decisions for the Epilepsy SectionInteracting extensively with the Department Chair and Senior Leadership at UCHealth to assess needs for section and plan activities that relate to future growthServing as a mentor to all epilepsy faculty, with an emphasis on our junior faculty and acts as a positive role model and leader within the section and departmentDeveloping and executing strategies and processes that will drive the strategic plan and vision of the section and ensure the goals, standards and objectives are in alignment with the strategic planRecruiting and growing the section in Metro Denver and throughout the Rocky Mountain region
Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at

Associate Professor- $187,000 - $242,000

Professor – $210,000 - $300,000

Salary is commensurate with skills and experience and is set based on a 1.0 FTE.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
