Undergraduate Studies - Advising First

This position serves as Assistant Dean/Director of Advising First within the Division of Undergraduate Studies. We are looking for highly qualified candidates who are interested in the opportunity to lead one of the nation's most respected advising and coaching teams and to propel academic success and social mobility across the student body. The person in this position would be responsible for the effective functioning and advancement of Advising First collaborating to support campus-wide training/development and promoting broad student success initiatives across the university.

Provides management and strategic direction of advising and coaching at the University and in Advising First. Oversees advisor training and development for the campus. Researches, reviews, and reports on enrollment trends and works to foster and develop initiatives that affect student retention and progression.

Serves on campus-wide committees associated with student success, including retention, persistence, graduation and post-graduation outcomes. Participates in regularly scheduled programs to evaluate services both within the Division and across campus.

Serves as liaison to academic dean's offices and departments to coordinate academic advising and coaching as well as to develop policies and procedures aimed at promoting best practices for student services across campus.

Creates and supports curricular and co-curricular initiatives that are housed in the Division of Undergraduate Studies and connects with departments across campus, including overseeing the Exploratory major, course development/instruction (SLS courses), programming, and assessment.

Pursues outside grant opportunities and philanthropic funding to support research and student success initiatives within the Division of Undergraduate Studies and FSU broadly. Develops research projects and staff development initiatives to support advising and coaching efforts.

  • Master's degree and five years of experience in a related academic or student services field or a bachelor's degree and seven years of related experience. Two years of experience must be in a supervisory role.
  • Academic advising experience.
  • Experience in public speaking and/or presenting workshops.
  • Experience managing day-to-day operations of a program.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives.
  • Ability to interpret academic program requirements and provide advice.
  • Ability to utilize problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of academic resources available to students.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of project planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions.
  • Ph.D. or other terminal degree preferred

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.

  • Experience conducting academic research and securing outside funding.

  • Experience with curriculum development and classroom instruction.

  • Knowledge of the current literature related to student success, retention, and persistence to graduation.

  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
