Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting and executing a broad range of web, video and print communications products that inform and engage the general public, scientists and stakeholders. The incumbent will direct the creation, production and dissemination of fields magazine and website. This includes managing the budget; hiring and managing freelancers; managing meetings; coordinating with advisors and content partners at other institutions; planning, editing and writing content; managing electronic distribution of new issues; and execution of creative distribution strategies to grow audience.

Shapes standards/styles for MagLab events, videos, websites, etc. Supports researchers with scientific figures, graphical abstracts, etc. to advance the scientific reputation of the lab. Manages and grows the MagLab brand in the physical, social, web and print space. Ensures alignment with brand requirements from funding agencies and host university/institutions.

Collaboratively manages and facilitates the development of new web content, infographics, stories, animations, video products and other strategically-valuable, timely communications tools to inform key audiences about news, research, events and tools available at the National MagLab. Manages the electronic distribution of web content updates.

Implements other creative communications strategies to advance the lab’s goals, and builds a deeper trust with our audiences. Supports the Public Affairs Director as needed with other departmental efforts, including proofreading, editing, Open House, tours, etc.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field and four years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to eight years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook or equivalent software.
  • Ability to simplify complex concepts into products that resonate with audiences.
  • Knowledge of current media technology and trends.
  • Ability to establish effective collaborative relationships with people in a variety of different roles and technical positions to fulfill the demands of the role.
  • Knowledge of communications/journalism ethics, rules, and procedures.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students while promoting equity and inclusion.
  • Willingness to work as part of a small team and support colleagues in tasks outside of normal duties when needed.

Preferred
  • Familiar with Google Analytics and other Google website tracking products.
  • SEO (search engine optimization) experience.
  • Event planning (live & virtual) experience.
  • Experience with traditional media and new/social media to produce positive coverage.
  • Familiarity with national/international best practices, resources and professional associations that would advance the lab’s communication goals.
  • Demonstrated examples of strategic partnership development as a communications tactic.

This position is partially funded by soft monies, with renewal based on available funds and the needs of the University.
