Department Summary:

We are dedicated to exploring the biological basis of brain disease and injury and are committed to preclinical science focused on the development of treatment strategies for prevention and recovery. Our center maintains state-of-the-art basic and preclinical science facilities and supports distinguished faculty with research programs targeting neurovascular disease and stroke, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, neuropsychiatric disorders and substance abuse. Our faculty have extensive interactions with the other health institutes and collaborate with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences by sponsoring graduate training programs in the basic neurosciences, the neurobiology of aging, and pharmacology, which take advantage of strong research programs in the disciplines of molecular pharmacology, neuroendocrinology, and the biology of aging.

Position Overview:

Assist in research, including the collection of information and sample and the analysis of collected information.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced computer skills using a range of software programs including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, SPSS, STATA, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; perform other administrative/clerical tasks.
  • Aptitude in general laboratory procedures, techniques, and documentation.
  • Willingness to acquire competence in new techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

Neuroscience coursework and biomedical research lab experience highly desirable. This can be from employment or independent study in upper level coursework at an undergraduate institution.

Physical Requirements:

Carrying, Cleaning, Lifting up to 50 pounds, Squatting, Stooping, Bending, Standing, Walking, Writing, Ability to communicate


Conduct biochemical/neurochemical analyses of CNS tissue samples using establish neurochemical techniques


Work with rodents for several assessments of motor function


Conduct aseptic surgery in rodents


Maintain stock of necessary reagents and supplies


Prepare solutions of pharmaceuticals for use in animals (periodic, as reequested)


Maintain master spreadsheets of projects to detail sample ID and assay results


Conduct statistical analysis of results


Work with PI to analyze results as necessary


Work with other lab staff to ensure ordering of reagents and supplies is done in a timely manner


Troubleshoot technical problems as necessary to their resolution; Assist in writing of methodologies and results for grants, manuscripts and reports
