Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Public Safety, the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Coordinator is responsible for the development, management, and implementation of the EH&S programs for Kirkwood Community College based safety programs at their main and offsite campuses. This position is responsible for providing technical guidance, operational program management and personnel management within the Occupational Safety and Environment of Care Unit within the EH&S Department.

The EH&S Coordinator will implement and maintain a proactive and comprehensive process for identifying and effectively managing physical and behavior-based hazards to people, property, and the environment. Programs under the EH&S Unit include respiratory fit testing, indoor air/environmental quality, accident/incident/occurrence investigations, ergonomics, risk/ligature risk assessments, hazard surveillance audits, construction safety, industrial hygiene exposure monitoring, asbestos management, lead management, hazard communication, hazardous chemical and pharmaceutical materials and waste management, hazard communication, spill response, fire drills, Hazardous Materials & Waste Management compliance, and general OSHA standards compliance. In addition to supporting the other units within the Facilities & Public Safety Department as a whole.

The EH&S Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the organizations' compliance with existing and developing standards and regulations issued by federal, state, municipal agencies and non-governmental and accreditation agencies.

    Develop, Implement, Maintain, and Manage:

  • The ongoing hazard surveillance survey/inspection program in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • The indoor environmental quality program, including developing air quality investigation plans, conducting air and surface sampling and monitoring, calibrating air monitoring equipment, and providing reports on findings with recommended actions.
  • Injury and accident investigation program, including the preparation of reports on findings and making appropriate recommendations for improvement.
  • The ergonomics and injury prevention/safe patient handling program making appropriate recommendations to reduce risk including job task and work site design and ensuring compliance with the biennial CAP ergonomic reviews. Activities are related, but not limited to the seated workstation, materials handling, safe patient handling and laboratory ergonomics.
  • The focused risk assessment and annual proactive risk assessment program to identify and reduce the risk to individuals, units and the organization and develop risk reduction plans as required.
  • The chemical and pharmaceutical waste program, including working with hazardous wastes, conducting daily/weekly chemical waste pick-ups, providing training on proper disposal procedures, conducting Satellite Accumulation Area inspections, bulking waste into drums, segregating incompatible waste, neutralizing chemicals as necessary, ensuring proper container labeling, marking, handling and shipping, oversee lab packing and removal operations, recycling wastes, and promoting waste reduction, waste minimization and toxic use reduction.
  • The hazard communication program, including annually updating chemical inventories, providing annual training on the program, providing guidance on new chemicals coming into the organization, recommending appropriate engineering controls, administrative controls and/or PPE based off safety data sheets, and maintaining the College's online safety data sheet database.
  • The fire safety and drill program, including coordinating, running and evaluating fire drills on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • The chemical spill response program including responding to spills or releases both internally or outside buildings, and reporting to appropriate authorities, both in-house and regulatory
  • The Automatic External Defibrillator program
  • Participate in the construction program by reviewing pre-construction infection control risk assessments for capital and facility related projects, participating in construction related planning meetings, walking through and auditing construction sites for safety, and providing general construction safety and general OSHA standards compliance recommendations for projects.
  • Develops and implements applicable environmental health and safety policies, procedures, guidelines, SOPs, and training.
  • Interacts with regulatory auditors, inspectors and surveyors, managing the investigation of the alleged hazard.
  • Ability to interpret, implement and comply with federal, state and local regulations and agencies
  • Provides technical support, guidance and training in regulatory compliance for all areas of the College relative to EH&S policies and procedures, and applicable regulations, permits, codes, and standards, including those of EPA, DPH, DOT, OSHA, DEP, NIOSH, ANSI, CDC, and NFPA. Advises/supports various committees to develop and review policies and procedures.
  • Responds to urgent and emergent calls, including as a member of the EH&S off hour, night, weekend and holiday on-call system.
  • Performs other applicable duties as required.

    Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.


    Bachelor's degree in safety, chemistry, biology, environmental health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental science, emergency management, a related field, or equivalent job experience.Comprehensive working knowledge of applicable regulations such as OSHA, EPA, JC, NFPA, NIOSH, FEMA.
  • Possess aptitude and willingness to safely handle chemical wastes and hazardous chemicals with appropriate equipment.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Proficient in writing reports and trending data. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver safety training sessions

  • Completion of FEMA Emergency Management Institute courses 100, 700 and 800.
  • Completion of OSHA 10 & 40 courses within 6 months’ hire
  • Certified or become certified within six months of hire as a 40 Hour Emergency Chemical Responder (HazWoper).
