Educational and Experience Requirement:

High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent with at least three years of work experience. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Act out the part of a patient in specific and defined clinical encounters in order to help the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine medical students practice data gathering, communication, and clinical examination skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

Standardized Patients (SP’s) are responsible for memorizing scripts detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations. Presents case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations. Portrays a role consistently and accurately as trained by the Standardized Patient Coordinator, Clinical Skills Director and clinical skills staff while remaining in character as trained when responding to student questions. Works in a professional manner when interacting with students, faculty, fellow SP’s and staff. Receives ongoing feedback in order to modify performance behaviors accordingly. Memorizes scripts accurately and in a timely manner. Scripts will be provided to the SP’s in advance of the training session, most often via email. Responsible for memorizing the script before reporting to that specific lab’s training session. Receives physical and verbal examinations by osteopathic medical students. Gives honest written and/or verbal feedback to students as needed for an event. Monitors other SP’s for quality assurance and communicates with the SP Coordinator about portrayal inconsistencies. Demonstrates flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments. Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors, and feedback evaluations. Receives training to accurately and consistently portray physical findings and deliver specific information for given scenarios. Will be used periodically in lectures for demonstrations and in lab sessions as the students learn how to do a physical and osteopathic structural exam. Plays a vital role in helping develop the students’ patient centered and clinical skills. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Must be able to follow oral and written instruction, and to work a modified schedule to accommodate classes and special projects. May require frequent contact with students, staff, and researchers.

This position is part-time, hourly, non-benefits eligible, working 19 hours or less per week.

The position is located at the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in Conroe, Texas.
