Assistant Athletic Director for Communications
Position Information: DescriptionThe University of North Dakota Department of Athletics is currently recruiting for an Assistant Athletic Director for Communications. The primary function of the Assistant Athletic Director of Communications is to assist in facilitating UND Athletics’ external operations mission of providing service and content by engaging fans, media, and recruits to positively impact The University of North Dakota, while generating revenue and interest for our programs. This position serves as the department head for athletic department communications and serves as the point of contact with the website. This position serves as the primary communications for football and/or men’s basketball & additional sports. This position will use discretion and independent judgement. This position will use creative license to formulate, affect, and implement operating practices related to assigned sports. Invention, Imagination, originality, and talent must be exercised by the employee on a daily basis.The purpose of UND Athletics is to initiate, stimulate, and improve the athletics program for student-athletes to promote and develop their education, leadership, physical fitness, athletic excellence, and provide opportunities for participation in a sport of choice. Its competitive athletics program is designed to be a vital part of the University of North Dakota’s education system by stressing the importance of each student-athlete being and active part of the student body while making satisfactory progress toward a baccalaureate degree.Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and direct the University of North Dakota Athletic Communication Office by training, hiring, supervising, and evaluating communication staff of full-time employees and student interns.Provide public relations strategy at the request of the Director of Athletics and/or the Associate AD for External Operations. Lead all aspects of website including, but not limited to, vigorously updating with accurate and timely information, judicious communication with website host & serve as point of contact for staff and coaches for website matters.Assist in executing content creation including, but not limited to, social media, website information such as bios pictures, schedules, production of game notes, game day programs, press releases, game story, post-game content & pre/post season media guides.Serve as communications contact for Football program and/or Men’s Basketball Program, and additional sport (TBD).Lead athletic department projects that aren’t sport related as requested by Director of Athletics and/or Associate AD for External Operations. Arrange and respond to media requests for coaches and student-athletes in a timely fashion.Direct press conferences including placement of media backdrops.Update archives for program.Manage press area before, during and after program’s home competitions including leading student-interns and stat crew.Build positive relationships with local and regional media members.Direct and assign photographers, as necessary.Award nominations submitted in timely fashion.Responsible for all communications functions including press releases, stat crew, archives, media advisories, website accuracy/timeliness.Oversee communications department budget.Other duties as assigned by Associate AD for External Operations and/or Director of Athletics.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including speaking, writing, and editing. Excellent organizational and computer skills.Must have effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.Strong familiarity with sports and willingness to work long and unconventional hours.Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes including having a valid driver’s license.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related fieldFive years of full-time work experience in communications, journalism, or related fieldTwo years of full-time work experience managing a company websiteValid Driver's LicenseSuccessful completion of a criminal history background check.
- Five years of full-time work experience in communications, public relations, or related field at a professional athletic or intercollegiate athletic entityFull-time work experience at an NCAA Division I athletic departmentTwo years of experience supervising full-time employeesExperience supervising studentsExperience working with SIDEARM websitesExperience producing graphicsExperience producing videos
