Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

The Department Safety Officer will serve as a point of contact between the Plasma Science and Technology Department and the EHS Division. They provide technical consultation and solutions to complex research design reviews and ESH program related issues for assigned areas.



Responsibilities

The Department Safety Officer will function as a troubleshooter, facilitator, and problem solver to assist line managers with division Integrated Safety Management (ISM) and provide ongoing support to assigned departments or divisions.

  • Will develop, implement, maintain, train, and evaluate Environmental, Safety, and Health programs.
  • Will also develop procedures and standards to maintain a safe, healthy environment in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations, requirements and standards, and all Department of Energy (DOE) orders.
  • Specializes in one or more disciplines or may be a generalist in several of the disciplines listed below:
    • Construction safety
    • Electrical safety
    • Emergency Management
    • Environmental Management Systems
    • Environmental compliance
    • Ergonomics
    • Hazard recognition
    • Incident/injury prevention and investigation
    • Industrial Hygiene
    • Radiation physics
    • Safety assessments and appraisals
    • Training
    • Waste management and pollution prevention
  • Provides customer service-based technical consultation.

  • May serve as a Division Liaison and Subject Matter Expert.

    • Knowledgeable in the customer division’s work activities, personnel, and associated hazards, and assists in hazard identification and the development of controls appropriate to the hazards/ work being performed

    • Requests that the appropriate technical support be provided to implement and interpret PPPL ES&H policies and procedures when necessary

    • Participates in incident reviews of illnesses, injuries, accidents, and other safety and environmental incidents

    • Serves as the Subject Matter Expert and coordinates the EHS review of formal authorizations (e.g., WPC Activity, Job Hazard Analysis JHAs, Safety Assessment Documents, and other work packages or procedures.

    • Develops and/or leads cross-functional EHS teams when necessary to assess complex operations and equipment

    • Proactively meets with Department Responsible Mangers, supervisors, Principle Investigators and researchers to review needs, performance data and convey pertinent safety information.

  • Manage assigned programs such as Accident/ Injury Reporting, Ergonomic, or any other duties as assigned.
  • Conduct physical inspections of work areas for compliance, audit programs and collect/ organize data needed for monthly/ annual reporting requirements
  • Review process changes, events, structures, and equipment for safety compliance.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Broad level of knowledge equivalent to that which would be obtained in a course of study in specialty fields such as Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene, or an equivalent combination of relevant academic degree(s) and professional experience.
  • BS/BA in specialty field, science, or engineering, plus 3-5 years experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have knowledge and work experience in the detection and control of hazards involved with technologies in a research environment.
  • Must be able to apply OSHA, DOE, ANSI, and other pertinent federal, state, and local regulatory requirements within a multi-program national laboratory.
  • Must demonstrate ability and experience in leading an interdisciplinary EH&S team and developing and presenting briefings and reports.
  • Must have ability to work under short-term deadlines while managing several different projects concurrently.
  • Must have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to recognize basic safe practices applications and interpret laws/regulations as applicable to safety compliance and laboratory operations.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  • Must wear PPE when required (safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves, respirator, harnesses, etc.)

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Ability to obtain or working toward professional certifications, ASP or CSP desired.
Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: extensive walking and standing, kneeling, squatting, use of tools/ keyboard/ writing, etc.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and/ or carry up to 25 lbs.
Working Conditions:

  • Most duties will be in an office setting with 15% of time spent in a research laboratory environment.
  • Occasional work outdoors, in varying weather, to include heat and cold may be required.
