Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources and Talent Management, the Assistant Director of Talent Management will be responsible for providing proactive consultation and value-added services focused on compensation, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, statistical analyses, and succession planning.

This Assistant Director of Talent Management opportunity acts as a consultant and partner to the University operations, driving the people strategy and organizational design, and the process of transformation, talent management, and workforce planning. The ADTM leads a team of HR Generalists in change initiatives and implements specific HR strategies to achieve organization goals and objectives, as well as align performance management and reward systems to drive and reinforce desired behaviors. Additionally, the ADTM will ensure HR programs and plans are aligned to the University priorities and monitors effectiveness through the tracking of key measures. Lastly, the ADTM balances organization function and needs in deploying HR programs to the departments and collaborates with HR program/policy/process owners to deliver effective HR programs.

Responsibilities:
•Establishes and maintains relationships with key decision- makers at the top of the university, department unit, or function. Uses extensive operational and process knowledge to drive the execution of a wide spectrum of HR programs.
•Proactively engages in strategic planning where there is HR impact in order to ensure successful implementation of HR programs and processes.
•Contributes to the development of the change management strategy within the business to support the implementation of HR programs and initiatives.
•Manages HR programs within the organization or function. Supervises the complex quantitative and qualitative analyses of financial and workforce data.
•Represents the needs of the organization or function on an ongoing basis to maintain consistent plans between HR and the business or function in program implementation.
•Manages and leads priority projects that support organization-wide transformation initiatives.
•Identifies the need for new or improved HR processes and drives the development and implementation of those processes.

Essential Job Functions:
•Responsible for partnering with the AVPHR and functional support specialists to timely and effectively execute people strategies using consultative services to ensure customer objectives & expectations are met.
•Works closely and proactively with leaders to ensure alignment of University and people strategies, plans, and activities.
•Collects, analyzes, and presents various Human Resources statistics as needed (for example, turnover statistics, performance management/merit increase comparisons and department culture surveys) and makes recommendations to HR management & leaders.
•Responsible for the identification, diagnosis, and resolution of employee relations issues, calling on appropriate resources to resolve issues. Coaches leaders on managing for performance, as well as on the formal performance management process.
•Supervises the HR Generalists in the execution of people strategies, plans, and employee relations, and all activities in the development and improvement of a strong organizational culture.
•Supervises the Compensation & Benefits Coordinator with job analyses and evaluation and compensation market analyses of new or restructured positions.
•In partnership with the Recruitment, consults with leaders in the creation of staffing plans. Develops and implements recruitment strategies to meet organizational needs for talent.
•Partners with Training & Recruitment Manager and organization leaders to develop, execute, and measure a dynamic Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging recruitment and retention strategy.
•Partners with the Training and Recruitment Manager to assess organizational needs, develop training programs, and provide facilitation and training to the workforce in order to meet those needs.
•Coaches and mentors HR staff and
•Identifies and recommends new approaches, policies, processes, and procedures to affect continual improvement and efficiency of services provided by Human Resources.
•Demonstrates day-to-day leadership and provides coaching and mentoring to HR staff to ensure readiness and completion of initiatives.
•Maintains compliance with federal and state regulations concerning employment.
•Manages the unemployment claims process to include completion of all unemployment claims, appeals, providing requested of documentation, and providing representation at hearings.
Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education Required:
•Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field, Master’s preferred.
•Certificates, Licenses and Registrations required: SHRM S/CP, PHR or SPHR

Minimum Experience Required:
•Seven to ten years of professional level experience as a Human Resources Generalist required involving two or more of the following major functional areas: employee relations, recruitment, compensation, benefits, organizational development or EEO compliance
•Experience facilitating change in a multi-cultural environment.

Key Competencies:
•Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of the Human Resources body of knowledge in the areas of workforce planning and employment, compensation, benefits, employee relations, performance management, leadership development and training and associated labor laws and regulations.
•Deep analytical and critical thinking skills required for reporting, analysis and problem solving.
•Strong consultative and negotiation skills; effectively work as part of a team. Has the ability to influence outcomes.
•Highly developed verbal, listening and written communication skills.
•Solid working knowledge of federal and state labor and employment laws and associated regulations (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, Title VII, EEO, HIPPA, AAP, etc.)
•Demonstrated strong customer service orientation.
•Ability to successfully multitask in a dynamic and growing environment.
•High level proficiency in MS Office and HRIS system required; Ability to create complex reports highly preferred.
•Strong mathematical aptitude required, as demonstrated by advanced utilization of Excel and other software for statistical and data analyses.
•A moderate to high level of conceptual thinking, judgment and decision making is required for solving problems that may affect many departments or processes, and that may require innovative approaches to complex situations.
•Demonstrated ability to view problems from the context of the larger picture of the organization’s overall goals and strategies; seeks effective solutions by collaborating with customers, leaders, and other HR team members.
•Demonstrated ability to manage projects and work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
•A thorough knowledge in the field of Human Resources, as well as in general business, required.

Physical Requirements:
Sedentary, exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.
Job Conditions:Indoor in a temperature-controlled environment. May occasionally require work outside of normal business hours and settings.

Athletics

Students can participate in or cheer on their peers in more than a dozen NCAA Division I sports. Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Join a fraternity or sorority
  • Get involved in community service
  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
