About Eastern Washington University:

Job Summary:
We are currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position: Assistant Director - LGBTQ+ Student Life

Reporting to the Director of Student Equity and Inclusion Programs, the Assistant Director for LGBTQ+ Student Life at Eastern Washington University (EWU) is a key communicator, educator, and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion through the lens of gender identity and sexual orientation for the University. The Assistant Director serves as the main point of contact for the EWU Pride Center and a secondary point of contact for the EWU Multicultural Center. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director to ensure both the Pride Center and Multicultural Center work collaboratively on campus-wide events, workshops, and initiatives.

The Assistant Director is responsible for designing and facilitating programs, resources, and communications in order to: (1) support the integration of LGBTQ+ students and issues into the university community, (2) promote the recruitment, retention, and social and academic success of LGBTQ+ students, and (3) facilitate the creation of an affirming and supportive environment through which gender and sexuality are understood to intersect with multiple identifications (e.g., race/ethnicity, class, age, religion, nationality, ability, and other social identifications) of importance and relevance to Pride Center constituents.

The Assistant Director will build collaborative internal and external relationships, and oversee the Pride Center's involvement in campus, local, and regional activities/events that promote an environment of affirmation and support for LGBTQ+ community members and that contribute to an overall climate of cultural competence. This position will mentor and assist students, staff, and faculty with referrals to appropriate on- and off-campus resources, as needed.

  • NOTE: Post-COVID-19 pandemic or when restrictions permit, the work location for this position will be on the Cheney campus.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Gender and Sexuality Studies, Social Work, Ethnic Studies, Education, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in a college or university environment, including at least one (1) year of experience advising students. [Internship, volunteer, or related work that is commensurate with two years of professional experience, including at least one (1) year of experience advising students may substitute.]
  • Demonstrated experience with LGBTQ+ communities and issues.
  • High level of cultural humility and experience working effectively with marginalized populations.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience developing, coordinating, and planning events and activities.
  • Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Gender and Sexuality Studies, Social Work, Ethnic Studies, Education, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of theories and practices related to social justice, intersectionality, and/or college student development.
  • Experience with assessment and design of learning outcomes.
  • Experience in grant writing, fundraising, and/or other forms of revenue generation.
  • Experience leading a team of student employees.

Responsibility / Duty:
Administration and Management
  • Manage daily operations of the center, including public reception and interior facility maintenance.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff. Develop and conduct staff training regarding intercultural communication, leadership, and LGBTQ+ identities and issues.
  • Manage the Pride Center budget, including allocation of programming funds consistent with University policies and guidelines, in collaboration with the Director.
  • Maintain and upgrade the Pride Center’s website and social media pages and integrate technological resources into Pride Center operations/programs. Oversee production of regular publications, newsletters, and promotional materials.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate annual goals and learning objectives for the Pride Center programs and staff, and assist with the development of multi-year strategic planning efforts for the Student Equity, Belonging, and Voice unit under Student Affairs.
  • Maintain administrative reports, compile data on program activities, and coordinate assessment processes used to analyze and evaluate effectiveness of Pride Center programs, usage, and outreach.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures as they relate to campus organizations, communications, and the use of University facilities. Maintain current knowledge of changes in University policies.

Responsibility / Duty:
Program Development
  • Develop, plan, and coordinate small- and large-scale social, cultural, and educational programs intended to raise campus awareness regarding intersectional LGBTQ+ issues. Assess and respond to student, faculty, and staff needs, and the quality of life for the LGBTQ+ campus community, through programming.
  • Provide campus-wide educational programming (e.g., workshops, trainings, and seminars) that promotes cross-cultural communication and awareness around LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Participate in the development, management, and implementation of programs that foster multicultural education in conjunction with Multicultural Center staff in order to support an increasingly diverse campus population.
  • Respond to requests for presentations, trainings, workshops, lectures, panels, and resources on LGBTQ+ identities and issues.
  • Develop programmatic partnerships and coalitions with academic and administrative departments as well as student and community organizations. Promote the recruitment and retention of LGBTQ+ students.
  • Coordinate all publicity efforts to raise awareness of the various services and programs available through the Pride Center. Oversee production of outreach materials that publicize programs and services, including but not limited to: flyers, posters, brochures, and website.

Advocacy and Outreach
  • Analyze current issues, trends, and best practices - on the local, regional, and national level - related to diversity, inclusion, higher education, and LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Provide an LGBTQ+ perspective in Student Affairs and in campus-wide discussions of campus climate and student community issues. Represent the Pride Center on campus-wide committees and public forums.
  • Act in the absence of the Director of Student Equity & Inclusion Services during staff meetings.
  • Initiate, develop, and/or support an LGBTQ+ component in student, staff, and faculty orientation programs and campus publications.
  • Provide advising and assistance to staff, students, and faculty on LGBTQ+ issues. Collaborate with officers and members of Eagle Pride, EWU’s LGBTQ+ student organization. Guide and mentor LGBTQ+ students through advising and consultation, and foster the leadership skill development of the LGBTQ+ campus community.
  • Serve as a resource in providing assistance and referral information to students, staff, and faculty regarding grievances, alleged discrimination, and harassment, in accordance with campus policies. Assist other administrative departments in responding to such complaints as needed, related to LGBTQ+ and diversity matters.
  • Assist in providing guidance to campus student, staff, and faculty groups in response to campus climate issues. Assist in resolving conflicts or campus tensions related to LGBTQ+ and diversity as they arise.

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

This position is covered by the Public School Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary Information: $49,344 - $55,000
