Position Summary:

Founded in 1965, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering educates more than 4,600 students (3,728 undergraduates and 961 graduates) with an integrative approach that blends fundamentals, research and hands-on experience. The School's aim is to unleash innovation, create opportunities and inspire ingenuity. The Samueli School's faculty members are leaders in their disciplines who have achieved worldwide recognition for their research and dedicated teaching. The School includes six academic departments: Biomedical Engineering; Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Materials Science and Engineering; and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Under the leadership of Dean, the School pursues research that is timely, socially responsible and cutting edge, and works in partnership with industry and state and federal agencies to promote the transfer of research to applications that benefit society. Current research thrusts include Communications and Information Technology, Energy and Sustainability, Human Health, and Advanced Manufacturing and Materials. The Facilities unit supports the needs of the School through the facilities management of assigned space in 12 buildings consisting of approximately 400,000 square feet, which includes buildings shared with other Schools on Campus. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) is one of the largest academic departments in the Samueli School of Engineering at UCI. Staff are responsible for administrative duties associated with a fluctuating population of approximate 200 employees. This includes our largest faculty population of 30 faculty, 30 non-senate academics, 8 career staff, 200 graduate students and 1300 undergraduate students. The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering provides a vibrant intellectual environment for our students, along with technologically advanced laboratories in a wide range of subjects, including biomedical engineering, design and manufacturing, control and robotics, energy and the environment, fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, nanomaterials and microsystems. Our faculty members are scholars and leaders in their disciplines and have achieved worldwide recognition and honors for their creative and pioneering contributions, and their dedicated teaching.

Under the general supervision of the Department Manager and the Faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the incumbent provides technical training and support for hands-on engineering education, including project-based and laboratory courses. Maintains a safe working environment by managing spaces and training. Assists with project planning, space usage, plans for laboratories and capabilities. Assists with prototypes and equipment. Serves as consultant on design and development activities and the engineering design process. Advises undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, visiting scholars and fee-based users in the safe and appropriate fabrication, operation, and maintenance of equipment, hardware, and facilities. Provides technical consultation for the procurement of equipment and training. Oversees TAs and student assistants responsible for project-based learning, senior design projects, and laboratory classes.

Hourly Compensation Range: 31.71 - $33.21

Required:

Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact well with others. Strong oral and written communication skills. Able to effectively work with students, staff, faculty to provide training in the operation of lab equipment Ability to maintain an atmosphere that fosters teamwork and collegial collaboration. Reliability and good attendance. Computer skills, including e-mail, word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, google docs, Solid modeling, basic system administration. Basic electronics skills. Fabrication Lab Management Skills Previous experience in managing lab facilities and supervision of personnel. Knowledge and experience ordering required supplies, purchasing of equipment and interacting with vendors. Ability to operate equipment such as a lathe, milling machine, drill press, welding and grinding equipment. Skill in design, fabrication and installation of experimental hardware. Time Management Skills Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and multiple requests for service. Ability to set priorities for scheduling fabrication training and equipment maintenance to meet the needs of the instructors, project advisors, faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students. Knowledge of Safety Requirements and Regulations Experience in policies and procedures related to machine lab safety Ability to provide clear instruction on the safe and appropriate use of fabrication equipment, Provide direction on the operation of equipment to include; fixture, set-up and operation of equipment.

Preferred:

Multiple years of experience with a formal engineering design process that includes defining the problem, enunciating requirements, developing and selecting concepts, verifying requirements, devising a work breakdown structure, developing a manufacturing plan, manufacturing, testing, and validating. Knowledge and experience of chemistry of mineral acids, their effects on metals and danger relative to personnel and environment. Degree in Engineering, Machine Technology, or completion of formal apprenticeship or a combination of equivalent education and experience. Experience in waste management and collection in high and low volume settings. Ability to trouble-shoot and repair electronics. Design and trouble-shoot electrical circuits Integrate and program micro-controllers and micro-processors. Computer programming. Engineering simulations.
