Position Summary:

The Scholarship Opportunities Program (SOP) works toward UCI's mission to encourage high-achieving undergraduates to compete successfully for the most prestigious scholarships, grants, and graduate fellowships available, and to begin learning about the process as early as possible. In the Division of Undergraduate Education under the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, SOP organizes and disseminates information on a select group of prestigious awards that are national and international in scope, including opportunities for funded research and study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. SOP also facilitates UCI's processes for evaluating applications and endorsing candidates for awards requiring University nomination. Additionally, staff provide individual and group counseling, present workshops, assist students with curriculum vitae (CVs), and edit Statements of Purpose and research/project proposals, and strengthen interviewing skills.

Under direction of the Scholarship Opportunities Program (SOP) Director, this position counsels students (i.e., scholarship candidates) both individually and in small groups to provide them with specific scholarship advising that includes articulating goals and identifying appropriate scholarships to achieve those goals; preparing competitive application materials that includes strategizing and crafting strong application essays; coordinating with Writing Specialists for additional writing support; obtaining letters of recommendation and affiliation and language evaluations; interviewing for campus endorsement; administrative duties including consulting with faculty, staff, administrators, and funding agency representatives; convening campus endorsement committees and conducting endorsement interviews; and writing campus endorsement letters. This position also assists the Scholarship Opportunities Program Director to develop and evaluate the SOP program and instructional materials; engages in program outreach and promotion; and interacts with faculty, administrators, academic counselors, and internal/external community partners of all levels. Using skills as a seasoned, experienced professional, applies the full range of knowledge and strategies related to learning skills for students. Works independently, receiving guidance in unusual or particularly complicated situations.

Compensation Range:

$50,600.00 - $77,100.00

Required:

Minimum of 2 years professional experience working with undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds improving their writing skills.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Experienced knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural / linguistic issues in applying academic support to students. Ability to understand writing models used for scholarship competitions as appropriate in different disciplines.

Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution.

Knowledge of academic curricula.

Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.

Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.

Interpersonal skills. Ability to take direction, initiate action, work as part of a team.

Skills in judgment and decision-making.

Problem solving and organizational skills.

Knowledge of current research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific).

Multicultural competencies, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations. Knowledge of program development, data gathering, assessment, and evaluation skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Confident public speaker to variety of audiences and small and large (100+ participant) groups.

Preferred:

Master's degree preferred in related area / or equivalent experience / training.

ESL Certification

Diversity Management / Inclusive Excellence Certification

Experience teaching ESL/ELL populations. Experience with national level processes for scholarships like the Rhodes, Fulbright, Truman, Carnegie, Goldwater, etc.
