The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for the position of Data Analyst. Reporting to the Executive Director of Research Data Analytics, the Data Analyst supports the Office of Research, Grainger College of Engineering through research activities that rely heavily on computational analysis of research metadata. The
incumbent will report to, and work closely with, the Executive Director of Research Analytics.

Data Analysis

  • Analyze scientometric data to address research questions formulated in the Office of Research
  • Research new computational approaches for data analysis
  • Test and evaluate prototypes on multiple research datasets
  • Generate reports for internal use and publication
  • Work effectively with other research and technology teams
  • Document methodologies to ensure reproducibility

Support Data Infrastructure

  • Maintain computational infrastructure in collaboration with Engineering and University IT staff
  • Manage research metadata using open-source tools
  • Maintain and extend existing ETL and curation workflows
  • Track provenance of data used in analysis

Customer Support

  • Engage with collaborators and users in research planning and hypothesis formulation
  • Propose and implement computational workflows to address research questions
  • Respond to communications in a timely, polite, and professional manner

To be considered for this position, candidate must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering or other quantitative discipline
  • Experience working in a research or education environment
  • Programming experience with SQL and Python
  • Experience with shell scripting and development in a Linux environment
  • Experience with version control and documentation

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, or other quantitative discipline
  • Experience with Linux system administration
  • Experience with one or more of Cypher, R, Java, C, or C++
  • Experience with cluster computing
  • Experience with Jenkins continuous integration server
  • Experience in Agile development techniques, e.g., Scrum
  • Experience with Data modeling
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques
  • Ability to work in an agile development environment
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Knowledge of research methodology
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

The Data Analyst position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date.
