Department Description:

The Division of Infectious Diseases develops ongoing clinical, educational, and research programs directed toward the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Working in nine countries, throughout the state, and across campus, the Division’s goals include:

• Coordinating basic and applied research in infectious diseases and fostering collaboration among other investigators and researchers.
• Coordinating outreach activities with UNC-CH School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology, and other Departments/Centers, as well as appropriate State of North Carolina agencies.
• Improving clinical care in infectious diseases, including activities related to the management of HIV and other infectious diseases; activities related to emerging pathogens, international health, and clinical outreach.
• Infectious disease prevention activities, including a focus on vaccine development and vaccination practices.

Position Description:

THIS IS A TIME LIMITED POSITION WITH AN ESTIMATED DURATION OF 3 YEARS.

This position is necessary to provide essential support for the ongoing experimental processes in the laboratory. Work requires knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques, and terminology. This position requires journey-level research operations support, data collection, and data analysis. This position will provide support by performing animal handling techniques: mouse handling and restraint, mouse breeding, mouse survival surgeries, experimental procedures on mice, and mouse necropsies including the processing of samples for downstream analyses such as flow cytometry, PCR, and histological analysis. This position will also perform histological techniques including but not limited to cutting and mounting tissue sections, H/E staining, IHC, IF, and RNAscope. This position will also image and analyze tissue sections. This position will perform cell-culture based assays. This position will also perform data analysis and data entry. Additional duties include general laboratory care (autoclaving, dishwashing, stocking, and inventory laboratory supplies), preparing common laboratory solutions and media.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Relevant and recent animal laboratory work experience required. Must be skilled in mouse research techniques including breeding and colony maintenance, handling and restraint, injections (IP, IV, SC, etc), biological fluid/tissue collection, and necropsy. Must be familiar with institutional guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals.

Must possess mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents, and supplies. Must have the ability to perform many varied tasks and challenging techniques.

Must be able to analyze data digitally and manually while able to clearly communicate information both verbally and in written form. Must be proficient or able to learn multiple computer software platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strongly prefer experience performing histological stains and imaging samples by microscopy.

Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences or related field.

Position/Schedule Requirements:
