Academic Advising Programs and Services serves the University by providing quality, timely advising services and support to students in transition, and to advisors and faculty across campus. Students are served through virtual advising, walk-in advising, workshops and other programming, course offerings, and online resources. Through comprehensive work with students, staff, and faculty, Academic Advising Programs and Services facilitates student academic success, major selection, career development, and personal enrichment.
The Exploratory Studies program in Academic Advising Programs and Services gives first time freshmen the opportunity to choose a major after a guided, structured process for major and career exploration and transition to the University. This is accomplished through one-on-one academic advising, the Exploratory Studies first year curriculum, experiential learning, and programming in the Exploratory Studies Village, emphasizing theoretical and practical methods of inquiry, guided reflection, engagement, assessment, and analysis. Through this process students gain the foundation for acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to make an informed decision on a major and become self reliant and productive citizens of an increasingly diverse community.
Re-deciding students at the University have the opportunity to visit the unit’s walk-in advising or participate in the Inter-College Transfer (ICT) advising program. Academic Advising Programs and Services supports these students in the major and career decision process and provides ICT students an advising home until the student is able to successfully matriculate to a major.
Academic Advising Programs and Services also coordinates special outreach for transfer students, international students, second year students, and students experiencing academic difficulty.Essential Job Duties:
The Academic Advisor will be responsible for the following:
Provide quality cross-curricular academic advising to students, following a developmental philosophy of advising and NACADA Core Values. Academic advising is an intentional process designed to support students as they develop and pursue educational, career, and personal goals. The ultimate goal of the student-advisor partnership is for students to increase their personal agency and critical thinking skills, and apply both to their life choices in college and beyond.
Teach sections of the Exploratory Studies orientation courses each fall and spring, and/or other departmental offerings as assigned. The orientation courses focus on transition to college, academic success, major and career exploration, and diversity. Follow established Exploratory Studies curriculum and teaching guidelines and maintain a course website and grade book through NC State’s course management system. Exploratory Studies course sections for first-year students may be linked with a First Year Inquiry course and/or require collaborative work with a Resident Mentor or co-instructor.
Participate in planning, implementation and support for curricular and co-curricular programs, working collaboratively with University partners, unit staff, students, and community members. Signature programs include the Majors Exploration Series, Majors and Minors Fair, Career Connections, and the Leadership Potential Retreat.
- Outreach and Service:
Participate in the University community, particularly in ways strategic to the unit’s mission, including serving as a liaison to one or more colleges/offices and supporting departmental committee work, walk-in and ICT advising, University Open House, new and transfer student orientation, advisor training and development, and Exploratory Studies Visitation Days and other recruitment events.
- Professional Development:
Actively seek professional development opportunities to maintain and improve knowledge and expertise in advising, teaching, diversity, technology for advising and teaching, and specialty areas.
Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student development or closely related field and at least 1 year of academic advising or student services, counseling experience at the college level.Other Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective academic support services at the college level
- Strong teaching and or program development and delivery skills
- Demonstrated understanding of developmental needs of college students
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Experience advising first-year students, particularly exploratory/undecided students
- Experience in advising and programming for special populations
- Career advising (e.g., use of career assessments, working with exploratory students)
- Teaching experience at the college level, particularly with first-year students
- Use of outcomes assessment to inform decisions
- Experience in using advising and teaching technology
- Program planning
