Job Description Summary
The research enterprise at the Perelman School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania (PSOM) is in constant need of highly-motivated research administrators to manage all aspects of sponsored projects including grants, contracts, proposal development, compliance, invoicing and payroll. PSOM's research administrators are a diverse group of professionals who come from various backgrounds such as healthcare, finance, administrative support, operations, project management, research, and grants management. These key roles support world-renowned researchers who are working to eradicate disease and improve healthcare around the world.

Job Description

We are seeking recent graduates or career changers who are interested in beginning a career in research administration. If you join us, you will participate in a three month learning program that includes classroom training, job rotations, coaching and cohort support. The Research Administration Trainee program, which includes full Penn benefits, is designed to provide the experience and training needed for new college graduates or individuals with some work experience to begin a career in sponsored research administration.

The Research Administration Trainee role is a full-time position that prepares an employee for entry-level roles such as grants coordinator or financial coordinator within one of the many research departments at PSOM.

The Research Administration Trainee completes training in:

  • relevant IT applications for research administration, finance, and human capital management;
  • core concepts in research administration, sponsored projects, and compliance;
  • basic skills in critical thinking, service delivery and collaboration; and
  • making a successful transition into existing departmental teams and projects.

Trainees will be required to participate in learning activities such as:
  • Online training modules to introduce core concepts
  • Instructor-led sessions to apply and integrate concepts
  • Peer-coaching-based simulations to develop critical thinking, problem solving, interaction, and relationship-management skills
  • Case studies of actual work
  • Individual coaching from the course director or other qualified research administration professional
  • On the job apprenticeship through rotations in academic and administrative departments

Upon completion of the 12 week training program, trainees will have acquired the skills to move into a full-time research administrator role within the Perelman School of Medicine.


Education: Associates degree and/or 2-3 years of relevant work experience.
