Departmental Overview

Physical Plant's mission is to continuously improve facility services for the campus community in partnership with clients and staff. The department is comprised of several separate units which include: the AVC Office (including Employee/Labor Relations, Payroll and Benefits), Support Services, Operations, Grounds, Custodial and Environmental Services, and Sustainability and Engineering Services.

The primary responsibilities of the Custodial Service Organization are to maintain the campus buildings at a clean and sanitary level. The Custodial staff members report directly to the Area Supervisor or Regional Manager.


Responsibilities

Custodians perform general cleaning maintenance duties in offices, classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, gymnasiums, restrooms, lounges, hallways and/or other designated public or private areas of a campus facility; and perform other related duties as required. Custodians may work individually or as part of a team in cleaning and/or maintaining assigned work areas. Incumbents may experience varying degrees of contact with the public depending on the nature, location and assigned work areas.

A. GENERAL CLEANING DUTIES
  • Sweep, mop, empty wastebaskets, recycling containers, and other receptacles. Clean stairs, hallways, corridors, walls, moldings, steps, terraces, windowsills and other designated areas. Dust, clean, wax, and/or polish furniture, woodwork, light fixtures, Venetian blinds, radiators, duct grills, black/white boards, filing cabinets and other designated areas of equipment. Mop, clean and/or disinfect restrooms, shower rooms and/or locker rooms with responsibility for replenishing restroom supplies including trash liners, toilet seat covers, and all dispensers: Wash doors, partition glass, mirrors, showcases, glass panels, inside windows and outside windows at ground level. Polish metal fixtures. Unclog minor drain stoppages. Vacuum carpets, draperies, upholstered furniture, and other designated materials. Remove carpet spots, shampoo carpets. High-speed polish floors and scrub/strip and wax floors.

B. MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT
  • Operate vacuum cleaners, buffers, shampoo machines, wet/dry vacuums, carpet extractors, polishing machines, backpack vacs, auto scrubbers, and/or pressure washers during stripping, waxing, buffing and/or other related cleaning operations equipment. Make reports on building deficiencies and/or equipment needs; have security responsibility for one or more assigned areas. May open and close buildings and general assignment classrooms. Raise and lower flags on official flag poles. Respond to and assist with minor water flooding. May assist in the setting up and dismantling of special equipment at functions. May load and/or unload large trash receptacles. May perform specialized cleaning in laboratories, surgical and/or operating areas, isolation and terminal areas as required. Learn to use and become proficient in the use of all new equipment.

C. SAFETY
  • Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines. Attend job-related and safety training as required.

D. MISCELLANEOUS/OTHER
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Twelve months of experience in a custodial cleaning operation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience preferred.
  • Skill and ability to operate a wide variety of custodial equipment with proficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and follow oral/written instructions provided in English.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work; and to follow safe work practices.
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively as a part of a team.
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner with the campus community including students, staff, building managers, academic personnel, craft personnel, and co-workers in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to meet job objectives in a timely, safe and efficient manner.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid California Driver's License required. May be required to participate in DMV Pull Notice System.
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies and work occasional overtime and on weekends/holidays as required.
