Departmental Overview

The Access Services Division has leadership for planning and coordinating access and circulation policies and procedures across the UC Berkeley Library. The Access Services Division consists of several units: Library Privileges, Doe/Moffitt Information Desks, Media Resources Center (MRC), Newspapers/Microforms Library and Current Periodicals, Doe/Moffitt Circulation Services (including Reserves Processing), and Stacks Maintenance. This division provides first level directional/informational assistance to library users and visitors.

Responsibilities

The Doe/Moffitt Information Desk Services Supervisor coordinates the six information desks at the entrances of Gardner Stacks, Doe, and Moffitt libraries. This position is responsible for day to day operations, including providing directional/informational assistance to library users, providing first-level emergency/security support, all carried out by a team of 40 to 60 student library employees. The supervisor interviews, hires, trains and monitors performance. The supervisor works with Doe/Moffitt Reference Services staff to develop training plans for first-level directional/informational assistance and methods for effective referrals.
  • The supervisor maintains Information Desk schedules and makes certain that all five desks are adequately staffed (Doe Library: Sunday 12:30-9:30pm, Monday-Friday 7:30am-9:30pm, Saturday 8:30am-5:30pm; Gardner Stacks and Moffit Library floor 3: Sunday 12:30pm-2:30am, Monday-Thursday 7:30am-2:30am, Friday 7:30am-10:30pm; Saturday 8:30am-10:30pm; Moffitt Library floor 4 Sunday 8:30am-Friday 10:30pm; Saturday 8:30am-10:30pm; and special hours during intersession and finals periods). The supervisor normally works a Monday through Friday schedule 10am to 7pm during the semester (schedule adjusted during intersessions and breaks).
  • The supervisor consults with Library Security to develop procedures for student employees to follow during emergencies, handling thefts and other disruptive behaviors. The supervisor also coordinates other related services such as overseeing the database of found items in the Doe/Moffitt complex.
  • The incumbent in this position provides public service assistance at the Privileges Desk, and handles other library related processes and projects. The unit follows the overall guidelines, policies, and priorities of the Library, under the direction of the Head of the Access Services Division.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Recent and effective supervisory experience (elements include hiring, training, coaching, delegating, evaluating, and/or motivating student employees)
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to public services and improving the user experience
  • Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities and improve workflows
  • Significant experience with circulation and/or technical processing in a library
  • Significant experience with providing public services at a circulation or other library public service desks
  • Recent experience with an integrated library system (ILS) and understanding of ILS bibliographic, item, and holding records
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member
  • Experience with standard office and collaboration software (MS Office, Google Drive)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic library experience
  • Experience with Alma ILS
  • Experience managing physical operations and staff in multiple locations
  • Experience interpreting and monitoring budgets

Salary & Benefits
