Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley is consistently ranked as one of the top public universities in the world. The creative director promotes and protects this global brand and furthers the mission of the university by creating inspired and compelling campaigns and creative works. The day-to-day duties of the creative director also include art direction and serving as the lead designer for the department. Works collaboratively to convey the quality, diversity, vitality and preeminence of UC Berkeley to its many audiences.


Leads the creative process, develops strategy, manages campaign execution, and executes art direction. Develops, adheres to and actively promotes design style guides and standards.
Requires subject matter expertise and an in-depth understanding of the audience and visual communication strategies and methods. Work is of considerable difficulty and requires consultative skills for leading projects with clients.

  • Brand management: Protects the integrity of the brand by monitoring and encouraging compliance with brand standards. Reviews and approves requests to use and license university trademarks for promotional purposes. Reviews and fulfills requests for logo lockups, new logos, or exceptions to brand standards.
  • Graphic design: Consults with clients to plan and design presentation of visual information effectively and appropriately to target audiences and to the selected visual medium; products may include social media graphics, publications, brochures, displays, presentation slides, proposals, technical manuals, websites, and other visual communications. Conceives, produces and approves files, graphics, and/or illustrations for visual media, including print and the web. Assesses complex or otherwise challenging written material and data and devises the best ways to present it visually to enhance its clarity and impact.
  • Campaign development: Works closely with project managers, writers, and clients to understand communication requirements, determines the most appropriate media and creates cost-effective products. Develops and produces visual presentations, devising visual themes that strengthen the communication of ideas and information. Effectively meet budget and time constraints.
  • Photography: Sources photos for news articles, social media posts, web features, marketing campaigns and other applications. Maintains digital assets, photo releases and manages copyrights. Hires, manages, schedules and mentors a team of student photographers. Provides creative and artistic direction on photo shoots.
  • Develops and maintains professional working relationships with external vendors who may include (but are not limited to): illustrators, photographers, interaction designers, production artists and printers to assure quality work within budget and deadline. Helps identify and select printers and vendors, and liaises with them regarding materials, costs and scheduling.
  • Using an advanced understanding of print and digital production processes, including computer software, for publishing, images, web sites, and various other media. Provides high-level guidance on design and publishing technology, services for web design, expertise on printing and other production processes for final products.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of design and communications concepts and applicable software applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
  • Advanced design, creative and artistic skills.
  • Advanced skills to devise broad design ideas, present them to clients, and produce results on time and within budget.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, including active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams and to effectively provide advanced design advice and consultation to clients on all aspects of visual communications.
  • Critical thinking skills, advanced organizational skills and proactive problem-solving / problem resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of visual journalism, photography and informational graphics as they apply to the needs of the Berkeley News team.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to “lead from the middle” and coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels.
  • Advanced skills in photography.
  • Advanced skills in videography and video editing.
  • Advanced knowledge of UC Berkeley, including its vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
