Communications Associate, Center on Privacy & Technology - Georgetown University Law Center

The Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law is seeking a communications associate to support its communication strategy and goals.

The communications associate will develop communications materials, improve and maintain the Center's website, review and edit Center communications to ensure clarity of message and tone, assist with social media accounts, and utilize understanding of Center research projects to improve promotional materials depth and relevance to intended audiences. This position will provide general communications assistance to support our central mission and goals. There will also be occasional event planning support.


  • Communications content development (graphics and text) for website, newsletters, social media, promotional materials, and grant reports in order to convey complex analyses and research findings.
  • Website improvements, updates, and maintenance.
  • Input and edit content for report websites.
  • Monitor, draft posts for social media accounts.
  • Communications and media outreach, coordination, tracking, and support.
  • Find and edit visuals for use in communication materials.
  • Assistance with development of strategies and tactics for pursuing communications goals.

Contact organization and media research
  • Organize, update, and maintain the Center's press list for effective outreach.
  • Monthly review of data; removing duplicates, identifying tags, inputting and/or attaching relevant information.
  • Researching new outlets or journalists that the Center can pitch its work to.

Event support
  • Coordination and support for convenings, events, webinars, and meetings.
  • Responsible for reserving space, tracking RSVPs, booking AV, caterers, facilities, etc.
  • Draft promotional materials' and advertises event to appropriate audiences.

Other duties as assigned
  • Assistance with various administrative tasks.

Work Interactions

This position would report to the Director of Communications & Operations, who in turn reports directly to the Founding Director of the Center on Privacy & Technology. There are no plans for this position to have a supervisory role over any staff. The position is expected to interact with students and other faculty and staff on a nonsupervisory basis. They will also engage with external partners as relates to communication campaigns.


This position requires a commitment to the Center's mission, a Bachelor's degree, 0-3 years of experience in communications, event planning or related field, and excellent writing skills. A background in issues related to civil rights, technology, surveillance, social inclusion, racial equity, gender equity, and/or advocacy—including lived experience—is preferred, but not required.

Other desired qualifications include:
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to clearly express complex ideas;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, including familiarity with various editing style guides;
  • Ability to organize and manage competing priorities, tasks and deadlines;
  • Responsibility for the quality and timeliness of their work;
  • Willingness to learn new skills and incorporate constructive feedback.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with photo/video/audio editing software or other graphic design experience;
  • Experience with WordPress, Drupal or other website editing software;
  • Experience with Mailchimp of other e-newsletter software;
  • Experience with managing and developing content for social media.
