The Research Specialist serves as the primary contact for women participating in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS) /Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). The Research Specialist provides recruitment, retention, and outreach services for the female participants to facilitate their continued participation in a long-term health study and related sub-studies; carries out scripted interviews and records data according to research protocol. The incumbent identifies community resources and responds to various client problems, both immediate and long term with appropriate referrals, as well as assists and/or participates in group activities and Community Advisory Board meetings, maintaining work related certifications as needed. Reports to the MWCCS/WIHS Project Director. Works in collaboration with other research assistants, the medical team and the data team including the Data Manager, the Project Coordinator, and the Principal Investigators. The Research Specialist duties include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitates informed consent for study participants, by explaining the study and answering their questions.
  • Performs data collection which involves sensitive information, data entry, and data edits.
  • Performs the role of direct first link with the study participants, scheduling research clinics in coordination with the clinical team and other research assistants.
  • Recruits and enrolls participants in sub-studies, arranging for study incentives payments.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements where necessary; mails labs reports.
  • Works on retention activities such as maintaining contact with the participant through-out the year.
  • Sends birthday cards and other positive mail to the participants; plays a major role in organizing the holidays party for the study participants.
  • Handles producing the study newsletter, gathers articles for the newsletter, and edits them as necessary, sometimes writing articles and preparing the newsletter using Publication software.
  • Performs other day-to-day project activities as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree—preferably in health or related field
  • 1 - 3 years of practical experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and detail-orientation
  • Analytical background, strong verbal and written communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and in teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish
  • Knowledge of research methods
