Information Systems & Computing (ISC) is the University of Pennsylvania's central IT organization, providing infrastructure and services upon which Penn's numerous Schools and Centers build their unique tools and capabilities. ISC's 270-plus employees work closely with the University's IT organizations in order to create, deliver and support products and services that help Schools and Centers operate efficiently and effectively.

Technology Services provides systems engineering, operations, networking, telecommunications, and collaboration services for use by the global University community.

The Senior Database Administrator Team Lead will provide senior-level support and expertise with MS SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle databases in on-prem and cloud platforms. This position will lead the DBA team overseeing the day-to-day activities and upcoming projects. This role will drive the DBA team focusing on automation, enhancements, adoption of latest technologies and integration of systems in support.

Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior IT Manager for Database Services the Sr. Database Administrator Team Lead will provide senior-level database support and expertise with MS SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle in on-premises and cloud platforms which includes installing configuring, maintaining and integrating with other integrated tools. This position will lead the DBA team overseeing the day-to-day run the engine activities and upcoming projects adopting latest technology standards. This role will drive the team and focus on automation, enhancements, adoption of latest technologies, standards and methodologies, and integration of systems in support. Provide technical support for various database engine implementations. Work collaboratively within the team and cross-functional team resources.
Provide occasional off-hours support for implementations and incident support.

This is a two-year position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and support on-prem and cloud platforms of MS SQL, MySQL and Oracle databases and all associated software integrated with these technologies.
  • Lead the DBA team day-to-day activities and upcoming projects. Work with vendors and consultants to ensure work and services are being performed as agreed.
  • Provide technical support with database engines or other software issues during implementation, testing, go-live activities as well as in on-going operational support.
  • Assume key role in troubleshooting performance issues, recommending process improvements and support steady-state student systems activities. (MS SQL Server, MySQL)
  • Conduct capacity planning, data recovery and mission continuity planning for all systems involved in relevant projects.
  • Participate in required team and departmental planning sessions including all project meetings.

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of experience in database management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous database administration experience, including experience with MS SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle in a large-scale environment is required.
  • Possess the ability to effectively lead a team of technical resources.
  • Must be open-minded and a team player.
  • Ability to work with business partners and peers of varying levels of technical proficiency.
  • Experience successfully engaging and communicating with various levels of managements, peers as well as vendors and vendor's personnel within a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to produce written business communications and documentation.
  • This position requires occasional off-hours support for implementations and incident support.
  • Previous experience with Azure, AWS Cloud and other database engines strongly preferred.
  • Familiar with Ellucian Banner Student and Financial Aid modules a plus.
