Scope of Job:
To coordinate and facilitate complex accommodation process requests for students with disabilities who are registered with the department, as well as students who seek accommodations related to pregnancy and parenting, in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations and university policies. Provide outreach to university and community partners regarding services provided by the department.


Description of Duties:
• Serves as the point of contact for students with disabilities enrolled in Health Science programs and School of Medicine and is the subject matter expert in this area.
• Ensures that accommodation requests are handled and processed in a timely manner in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations.
• Reviews and analyzes information obtained in the interactive process (i.e. analysis of disability documentation, assessment of individual student’s functional limitations and access barriers, review of academic curriculum / program requirements) to determine accommodations needed to facilitate equitable access to participate in university experiences for students with disabilities.
• Provides guidance and training to assigned staff and provides support in critical situations.
• Proposes updates to policies and procedures to better serve the student population.
• Coordinates and communicates with the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Departmental Review Committee (DRC) to make recommendations for reasonable accommodations; creates and distributes students’ accommodation letters in a timely manner; prepares accurate case notes in a timely manner for each communication with SAS students.
• Confers with and advises faculty, staff, and others working with students with disabilities in complicated or difficult situations; provide technical and instructional assistance, procedural guidance, and problem-solving assistance; collaborate with academic departments regarding developing and implementing inclusively designed educational activities.
• Advises students, faculty, and staff on disability-related accommodations, policies, and procedures.
• Advises students, faculty, and staff on pregnancy, pregnancy-related, and parenting accommodations, policies, and procedures.
• Actively participates and assists in the planning, development, and implementation of departmental programs and services.
• Collaborates with, and refers students to, appropriate university, community, and state resources.
• Plans and conducts outreach and professional development regarding SAS services and equal access to faculty, staff, and students, and participates in community outreach to enhance knowledge of accommodations and accessibility requirements.
• Cultivates and maintains collaborative relationships with university faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure equitable access for students with disabilities.
• Assists in the coordination, development, and implementation of programs to improve retention of students with disabilities and those who are registered with SAS and academically at-risk
• Utilizes electronic records management system for purposes of accurately recording communications related to registered students and accommodations/other supports provided.
• Reviews electronic records management system and recommends modifications to methods or procedures for purposes of accurately recording data related to registered students and accommodations/other supports provided.
• Responsible for preparing collecting and summarizing data for analyzing departmental reports.
• Participates as a member of the university’s Care Team.
• Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Master’s degree in Psychology, School Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
None.

Licenses/Certifications:
Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, or Licensed Specialist in School Psychology.

Required Experience:
Four (4) years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities.


Preferred Experience:
Experience working with accommodations in health science academic programs in a higher education setting.


Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment and Microsoft Office Suite; ability to become proficient in the use of the departmental records management software (AIM).


Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.


Other:
Knowledge of relevant federal regulations including ADA-AA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1978, Title IX (Pregnancy and Parenting), and FERPA, as well as related accommodations in higher education; excellent written and oral communication, including presentation skills; ability to interpret disability documentation provided by a variety of qualified professionals (i.e. medical doctors, educational diagnosticians, speech language pathologists, therapists, psychologists, etc.); ability to maintain confidentiality and navigate complex communications regarding accommodations with faculty, staff and students; ability to work effectively with colleagues by demonstrating respect for deadlines and collaborative problem solving; ability to work in a face-paced environment and exercise good judgment in making decisions related to departmental functions. Ability to evaluate, interpret, and apply complex requirements and policies. Conflict resolution skills.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.
