For nearly 40 years, SIEPR’s mission has been to support research that informs economic policymaking while engaging future leaders and scholars. At its core is SIEPR’s faculty—over 100 faculty members who represent all seven schools at Stanford. With SIEPR support, they study a vast array of economic policy-relevant areas in the U.S. and around the world, collaborating with other established and up-and-coming researchers from within and outside Stanford. SIEPR’s vibrant community of scholars shares knowledge and builds relationships among academics, government officials, the business community and the public.
SIEPR’s reach goes well beyond research support as it seeks to educate and energize a broad, diverse community of policymakers and influencers, including academics, students, business leaders, the media, and the public, about the most important economic issues. It does this by connecting the research to policy areas and disseminating it to policymakers and influencers; providing state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure; delivering cutting-edge thought leadership; and deepening relationships among various stakeholders by hosting frequent conferences and gatherings. SIEPR’s vision is to raise living standards and improve quality of life by making economic policy more effective at all levels.
Building on this solid foundation, SIEPR is accelerating its efforts around California-specific economic policy research. To this end, SIEPR has launched a California Policy Research Initiative to create knowledge supporting California policymaking. In furtherance of its goals to inform and improve California policymaking, SIEPR is also forging a partnership with the California 100 Initiative (“CA100”). About the California 100 InitiativeThe California 100 Initiative seeks to provide a transformative vision for the state of California, with a focus on thirteen key, interrelated issues that affect people and planet alike, in the medium as well as longer term. CA100 aims to articulate a strategy for California’s next 100 years that is grounded in systematic research and evidence, deeply engaged with Californians around the state, and guided by core values and commitments to innovation, resilience, inclusion, sustainability, and equity. CA100 is guided by the counsel of a commission of diverse leaders and led by an executive team that includes an executive director and representatives of partner organizations such as Stanford’s Director of Advanced Technology. CA100’s executive team also includes directors of engagement, innovation, and research from other partner institutions. The Importance of Basic Research and Advanced TechnologyBasic research and advanced technology are key priorities for SIEPR and CA100, both as a substantive focus area involving research, industrial, and workforce policies that promote the development of strong regional clusters in innovation, and as a “throughline” involving improvements in various policy issues in both public and private sectors. For decades, California has led the nation in research and development, commercialization, and mass adoption of advanced technologies. The state’s history is a case study in innovation, from the foundations of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and CalTech in the early 1930s, to Stanford Industrial Park in 1951 and defense-related R&D investments in the decades that followed, to the growth of Silicon Valley. California has been a leader in advanced technology in fields ranging from semiconductors and personal computing, to artificial intelligence and biotechnology. Its continued success in the coming century will require it to build upon the state’s many core strengths, while at the same time recognizing the potential challenges advanced technology might pose to privacy, sustainability, and other core values. While advanced technology offers considerable promise, we also need to ensure that the adoption of advanced technology is ethical, equitable, and empowering of individuals and communities alike. In addition to being a substantive area of importance, advanced technology is also a key throughline that cuts across nearly every policy domain, from healthcare to transportation to energy and the environment. Systems need to be redesigned and reformed in ways that ensure innovation, as well as efficiency in the use of scarce resources, whether monetary or planetary. Leveraging new technologies offers critical opportunities for improving public and private sector operations across nearly all domains, from streamlining service delivery to ensuring greater transparency and accountability. - Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of SIEPR’s advanced technology program and partner CA100’s Advanced Technology workstream, including incorporating technology and innovation into all CA100’s research tracks. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements.Lead the development of a long-range strategy to build on California’s strengths in basic science and advanced technology and to maintain its leadership in the state’s next century.Build strong relationships with industry, government, and community partners. Represent the advanced technology throughline across the university, with CA100 and other external stakeholders.Oversee financial management of the advanced technology program.Guide advanced technology research
- Advanced degree and 5 years of experience in advanced technology and/or technology policy, in either the public or private sectors
- 3 years of experience in a supervisory or management capacity
- Excellent written and oral communication skillsKnowledge and experience at the nexus of technology and policy preferred, and in two or more parts of innovation clusters or ecosystems, including basic research, commercialization, entrepreneurial support, finance, industrial policy, international trade, and advanced manufacturing
