The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist to assume the role of mouse colony technician in the Owens’ laboratory. Research in the Owens’ laboratory focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that contribute to development of cardiovascular disease with an emphasis on atherosclerosis.
The applicant will be responsible for managing a large and complex mouse colony, which houses over 700 cages and 40 unique breeding strains. Therefore, the applicant must be comfortable handling and working with mice. Responsibilities include maintaining meticulous records of mouse inventories, mouse breeding/weaning/husbandry, PCR genotyping, and maintaining a transponder-based mouse identification system and electronic database. In addition, the applicant will also be responsible for writing and updating ACUC animal protocols and managing Material Transfer Agreements with collaborating researchers. As part of these duties we expect the applicant to have a strong background in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
The individual will work closely with other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of animal experiments. The position requires coordinating research projects and logistics with other lab members; compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures; consulting with the Principal Investigator and Lab Managers as needed and helping oversee laboratory equipment and supplies required for operation of the laboratory. Applicant will be expected to communicate clearly with laboratory members and help seek possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand.
Must obtain one of the below education and experience levels.
- High School diploma and 6 years of experience
- Associates degree and 5 years of experience
- Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience
Preference will be given to an applicant with experience working with research animals or in a research lab setting.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
