Department Description:

The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the acquisition and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology. This will be accomplished by establishing and maintaining a high quality, research-active faculty who are committed to the research mission of UNC-Chapel Hill as evidenced by scholarly publication, the establishment of well-funded research programs and an exemplary overall international reputation. Position Description:

This Laboratory Assistant in the Department of Biology provides research support and laboratory assistance to a research group of 10 scientists in the plant molecular biology laboratory of Prof. Jeff Dangl. The position requires excellent organizational and record keeping skills as well as communication skills. The position requires representing the group with sales representatives and managing the time sheets of temporary employees. Duties include: managing and maintaining laboratory inventory, ordering research supplies, maintenance of laboratory equipment including routine cleaning, sterilization and performance tests, organization of equipment repair as necessary, cleaning glassware, preparing chemical solutions for growth of bacteria and plants, growth and maintenance of plant materials, and participation in research with scientists in the group.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to calculate molarity of a solution, as well as use a pH meter and analytical scales is required. Ability to maintain records and work with spread sheets is also required. Demonstrated competence using Microsoft Office and sterile techniques for bacteria culture required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with specialization in molecular biology or chemistry.
