Nature of Work:

The Professional Research Assistant (PRA) position is designed to work within the Section of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, to assist with activities required to perform clinical protocols in the areas of maternal fetal medicine, specifically intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).  The PRA will assist in maintaining standard operating procedures, data collection forms, and database layouts.  During the enrollment phase, the PRA will perform patient screening and recruitment into the Perelman Foundation Intrauterine Growth Restriction research studies.  Specific duties include: Obtaining medical history and current medications, reviewing protocol inclusion/exclusion criteria, and confirming eligibility of subject. The PRA will ensure that the informed consent process has occurred, is properly documented, and filed as required.  The PRA will familiarize potential subjects with the details of the study through phone contacts and personal interviews and will schedule subject participation in research, coordinate availability of necessary space, and clinical support (including but not limited to physician, clinical staff, and laboratory staff).  The PRA will assist in data collection (i.e., diet information and the collection of infant body composition measurements).  Additional tasks include accurate recording of the relevant information on data forms, perform data entry, and data queries.  The PRA will coordinate patient follow-up data and scheduling clinic visits.  The position will require travel to sites in Aurora (Anschutz Medical Campus), Denver (Hobbins Perinatal), and Parker (Parker Perinatal Center).  This PRA will serve as the study investigators’ primary resource for data management, analysis, and preparation of manuscripts.  

Professional Field:

The PRA should be attentive to detail, have excellent interpersonal communication, organizational skills, the ability to problem solve and multi-task, and be able to complete all required documentation (either manual or electronic) as required by the studies being performed.  Prior certification by Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board (COMIRB) is desired. The PRA will also be trained in electronic medical charting at all hospitals where the studies are being conducted (EPIC at University Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado). 

Supervision Received:

The PRA will be supervised by the study Principal Investigators (PIs) and Perinatal Research Core manager.  Formal discussions with the PRA/PI will be held on a regular basis, frequency will depend on individual’s background and clinical research experience – however, ad hoc discussions will occur virtually every day.  Additionally, large group meetings including the study investigators and staff will also be held regularly.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Assist with development of research protocols
  • Assist in designing and maintaining standard operating procedures, data collection forms, and database layouts
  • Subject screening, recruitment, consenting at multiple sites
  • Data collection and data entry
  • Coordination of follow-up visits
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of local OB/GYN practice outreach and study education.
  • Conduct follow-up phone interviews, schedule clinic visits
  • Assist with collection and processing of samples collected for research
  • Maintain required regulatory approvals throughout the course of each study
  • Ensure the maintenance of research folders/checklists, and keep datasheets up to date at each enrollment site
  • Maintain study binders, excel follow-up spreadsheets, orientation packet, regulatory binder, etc. for each enrollment site.
  • Maintenance of study specific certifications, COMIRB training, computer training and other hospital required training
  • Attend and coordinate regular large group and small meetings.
  • Conduct literature search and reviews
  • Create/maintain research databases in REDCap, Excel, and OnCore
  • Perform statistical analysis on study data and/or collaborate with statisticians-Assist in the preparation of abstracts, posters, and publications
  • Submit manuscripts to medical journals
  • Assist in the revision of manuscripts to address journal reviewers’ comments and critiques
  • Cover pager on nights, weekends, and holidays in collaboration with Perinatal Research Core team
  • Orient and train new staff and delegate duties as appropriate
  • Coordinate study coverage across study team members
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Careful attention to detail and the ability to interact well with both clinical research subjects and other health professionals is necessary to succeed in this position.  The PRA will not be called on to make medical decisions at any time.  A solid fundamental knowledge of biological and medical sciences is desired.  The individual must be able to utilize computers for communication, data entry and completion of clinical reporting forms as required.  Ability to operate standard laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge, and phlebotomy skills are helpful.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $35,600-$45,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Biostatistics experience
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Previous clinical research experience
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, FDA Rules and Regulations, NIH guidelines, ICH guidelines and HIPAA regulations in relation to clinical research
  • Phlebotomy Certification
