Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Occupational Health & Safety, the Director Operations leads the operations of the unit in the development and delivery of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) systems and programs for the University community for all three campuses and other University of Toronto off-campus locations, the management of staff within the OHS unit and the automation and leveraging of technology in the development of compliance management systems and safety training programs.

Key responsibilities include providing direction and oversight to staff within OHS and divisional Health and Safety Advisors and Health and Safety Officers; providing advice to the Executive Director, OHS; providing leadership and establishing processes for effective injury prevention in all environments, providing operational leadership for OHS, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and public health authority compliance; providing operational leadership to the University of Toronto Mississauga and University of Toronto Scarborough campuses with OHS; developing the standard for training offered by units; and identifying relevant compliance legal and other obligations pertinent to the University.

Essential Qualifications:

Education:

Master’s degree in a relevant discipline required (e.g., Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering or Environmental Sciences) or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional or equivalent certification/designation/qualification required.

Experience:

Ten (10) years specialized experience progressing to a senior management level in health & safety. Experience in a similarly complex large research-intensive organization (University environment strongly preferred) dealing with complex health & safety issues (e.g., Industrial and occupational hygiene, occupational health). Demonstrated risk management approach. Demonstrated experience working with unions required. Experience developing and monitoring department and project budgets. Understanding of and experience with providing oversight to Occupational Hygiene and Health programs strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to interpret legislation and build appropriate relationships with both internal and government partners.

Skills:

Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated strong presentation skills with a diversity of stakeholders. High degree of political acuity and superior judgment. Ability to work with senior administrative and academic administrators as well as Union leaders in a manner which facilitates cooperation. Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative and as part of a team. Ability to work under pressure. Ability to develop, mentor and lead a diverse group of professionals. Experience assimilating complex information and drafting formal and informal reports for a variety of stakeholders with competing interests. Superior organizational and analytical skills. Demonstrated flexibility and problem-solving orientation.

Other:

Computer skills. Ability to operate specialized industrial and monitoring equipment. Good understanding of operational databases.

Hours of work

Full-time schedule (36.25 hours) on weekdays during University business hours of 8:45 am to 5:00 pm, with additional hours requirement to be meet operational needs including weekends and evenings.

Will require incumbent to respond to and/or attend onto campus(es) to handle emergencies and operational needs, travel between campuses.
