Advertised Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, reporting to the Vice President for Development, the Assistant Vice President for Donor Relations, Communications and Marketing (AVP) is responsible for the coordination and management of a comprehensive donor relations and stewardship program that appropriately and consistently promotes interaction with and recognition of donors at all levels for the University. Oversee the process of donor recognition and engagement and is the expert in all things related to donor recognition societies, acknowledgements, and donor communication efforts. Provide coordination and management of a comprehensive donor communications and marketing program that execution of integrated content marketing, public and donor relations strategy for the Division of Development to build awareness and drive engagement of alumni and prospective donors. Build messaging structure for a university-wide campaign and create a full suite of campaign collateral. Provide leadership, guidance and strategic direction to the staff who recognize and acknowledge donors through varied levels of communication and provide proactive services to units. This position sustains positive and mutually rewarding relations between the University and its donors. Work with the Vice Presidents for Development, and Gift Planning, and the Principal Gifts team to develop stewardship plans for the top presidential prospects and top donors to the UofSC system. Other responsibilities include collaboration with colleagues in the Office of Communications & Marketing to ensure consistency of messaging and branding with the university. This position serves as the division’s primary liaison to the Office of the President and Office of Communications & Public Affairs with respect to donor engagement, development events and other related functions. This position also serves on the UofSC Development Leadership Team

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions):

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years in donor relations, communications, and/or marketing experience in higher education. Supervisory experience is required. Required to travel to geographical location of donors/prospects, work evenings, and weekends. Must have a valid driver’s license. Prior experience in hiring, training and managing staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in higher education. Graduate degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of donor relations and/or development communications professional experience to include content strategy, marketing, social media, or public relations role in higher education. An in-house entrepreneurial spirit is desired.


Comprehensive knowledge of principles and methods of donor relations, stewardship, and/or development communication programs. Demonstrates proficiency in content management software, social media platforms, web analytics and social media monitoring. Organized, enterprising and a self-starter. Project management skills and an ability to meet deadlines are essential. Verbal communication skills along with an ability to work as part of a team. Ability to lead through efforts that are donor centric and focused on the donor fulfillment through donor engagement and communication. Ability to stay abreast of donor relations strategies and trends and innovative ways to communicate to current and future donors of the University.
