Position SummaryLibrary Services Specialists support librarians in a wide range of activities for Special Collections including acquisitions; organizing and processing collections; collection maintenance and retrieval; user services and reference support (referring users to librarians when appropriate); assisting librarians with exhibits and instruction sessions; and participating in library-wide efforts at supporting and improving user services.Under the general direction of the Head of Special Collections and University Archives, the person in this position coordinates all public services; oversees student assistants (hires, schedules, trains, supervises); manages departmental student assistant and supply budgets; orders processing and office supplies; answers informational and reference questions at the public service desk; coordinates office management and certain administrative tasks; participates in preservation activities and performs stack maintenance duties.For more information regarding the Library, click here.This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.Education and ExperienceIncumbents at this level perform more complex or specialized technical and paraprofessional library duties to support daily library operations and/or programs. They typically possess a broader knowledge of library functions within their functional area and/or have in-depth knowledge in their specialty area. Incumbents must possess a solid foundation in overall library policies, practices and procedures and must be able to use this knowledge in exercising judgment and initiative. Because of their functional expertise, incumbents often are responsible for overseeing daily operations of a library unit, including providing lead work direction to other library and clerical staff, as well as student workers. Additionally, they may assist in supporting the unit’s budgetary and/or other administrative activities.These qualifications for entry to Position Skill Level III normally would be obtained through the completion of a high school education or equivalent certification plus two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degreeExperience working in a library special collections or archivesExperience using primary source research tools including finding aids and other non-book collection inventoriesExperience processing special collections and archival materialsExperience leading the work of student assistants, volunteers or other staffExperience monitoring a budgetExperience in executing strong organizational and time management skillsSpecialized SkillsPublic service experienceBasic knowledge of copyright law and fair useFamiliarity with archival management systemsKnowledge and ability to apply preservation standards and guidelines to rare books, manuscript collections and exhibitsThorough knowledge of search techniques, bibliographic record formats, and location and holdings information in an online library management systemThorough knowledge of special collections practices and code of ethics, especially in regards to user and donor confidentiality, as well as security Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,704 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,528 - $6,505 per month.
