Position Summary:

The Department of Music at Spelman College invites applicants for a one-semester, part-time lecturer for the Fall semester of 2021. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching core piano classes and will work with faculty colleagues to coordinate the class piano sequence with music theory and aural skills courses. Each section of the Keyboard Skills course is a combined theory/aural skills class that meets one day a week for 50 minutes. The Keyboard Skills classes are taught in a piano studio with the goal to integrate theory, aural skills, and piano to strengthen each area. Primary consideration will be given to candidates with extensive experience of successfully teaching group and solo piano teaching at the collegiate level, demonstrated ability to teach piano skills effectively in the context of an undergraduate musicianship core. The successful candidate should be willing to work closely with students at a Liberal Arts college with a commitment to teaching and engagement of students.

SMUS 111A Keyboard Skills I, Mondays 3:00-3:50 pm; 1 credit
SMUS 111B Keyboard Skills II, Day/Time TBD; 1 credit
SMUS 111C Keyboard Skills III, Day/Time TBD; 1 credit


Required Qualifications:
A minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline (e.g. piano performance and/or piano pedagogy) at the time of application

Preferred Qualifications:
ABD, DMA, or Ph.D.in piano performance or closely related field (piano pedagogy); previous experience of teaching courses in music theory.
