Position Information: DescriptionThe University of North Dakota Department of Athletics is currently recruiting for a Head Coach of Tennis. This position will develop, promote, and supervise all facets of the University’s Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs while abiding by the rules and regulations of the NCAA, University of North Dakota and the conference. This position provides comprehensive assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing comprehensive instruction to the team. This position will provide instruction to the team that includes teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills as well as providing general safety instruction. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. 

The purpose of UND Athletics is to initiate, stimulate, and improve the athletics program for student-athletes to promote and develop their education, leadership, physical fitness, athletic excellence, and provide opportunities for participation in a sport of choice.  Its competitive athletics program is designed to be a vital part of the University of North Dakota’s education system by stressing the importance of each student-athlete being and active part of the student body while making satisfactory progress toward a baccalaureate degree.

Duties & Responsibilities

    Design instructional/training in-season/off-season specific to assigned team, player groups, and individuals.

    Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned team, player groups and individuals.

    Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student athletes on safe training and exercise techniques and ensure assistant coaching are doing the same.

    Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental well-being of the student-athletes and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same.

    Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes and ensure assistant coaching are doing the same.

    Develop a competitive program within the conference with the goal of post-season play (RPI, win-loss, conference & non-conference are all factors).

    Achieve academic success and acceptable graduation rates for team (team GPA, APR, FGR are all factors) by providing academic support to the student-athletes, directing the student-athletes to the proper resource offices, and enforcing all academic policies.

    Provide social media supervision of student-athletes.

    Motivate student-athletes and develop athletic and academic talent and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same.

    Provide overall supervision for team practices and games, practice/game management and game preparations/strategies.

    Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.

    Recruit quality prospective student-athletes (includes character, academic & athletics variables) for the sport program.

    Organize recruiting visits (both in home and on campus - official & unofficial visits).

    Conduct recruiting process with integrity, ethics, and knowledge.

    Handle documentation for each prospective student athlete in accordance with NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.

    Submit paperwork related to recruiting in a timely manner as directed.

    Follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.

    General program administration

    Oversight of all external functions of the program including, but not limited to, media relations, community service, public relations, fundraising, marketing, and camps & clinics.

    Other duties as assigned by Director of Athletics or Sport Supervisor.

Required Competencies

    Must have an effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni and general public.

    Excellent interpersonal communication (verbal and written) and communication skills.

    Ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize.

    Ability to teach and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

    Ability to develop a competitive NCAA Division I program.

    Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.

    Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes.

    Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes including having a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree.

    Minimum five (5) seasons of full-time collegiate tennis coaching experience.

    Experience recruiting prospective student-athletes for collegiate tennis teams.

    Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

    Valid Driver's License

    Successfully complete criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications

    Master’s or advanced degree.

    Demonstrated collegiate tennis recruiting experience in the Central Time Zone

    Three (3) or more years of collegiate tennis coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.

    Demonstrated success as a head or assistant tennis coach with conference championships or a winning percentage of 60% or above.

    History of no major or Level 2 NCAA violations.

    North Dakota ties by having lived or born in the state; University of North Dakota ties by either having attended or through employment.

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position ClassificationStarting Salary of $45,000 Annual, Full-time, Benefitted

Work Schedule/Start DateRegular Work Schedule; Travel up to 25% of the time due to recruiting and team competitions.  Anticipated state date will be no earlier than 7/1/2021.
