Job Title Director of Government Relations Job Description Summary The Director of Government Relations, under the direction of the President, serves as legislative liaison between Florida Polytechnic University and federal, state, and local governmental offices and legislative bodies. Responsible for development and implementation of strategies and programs to attain public funding goals and to foster mutually supportive, on-going relationships with elected officials, executive branch leaders, and other institutions as directed by the president. - Manage the overall strategic planning for the Office of Government Relations in support of university operations, directing others, and participating in activities.
- Work to advance the interests of Florida Poly's students, alumni, and faculty and staff by seeking and pursuing opportunities with federal, state, and local government officials to advance the academic, research, and public service missions of the university.
- Work with partners to keep the Florida Poly community apprised of important legislative, governance, and policy issues that specifically impact the university or public higher education in general.
- Responsible for advocacy initiatives and for cultivating relationships with elected and appointed government officials.
- Serve as a university legislative liaison to federal and state government officials, Board of Governors, and others, handling constituent and other requests.
- Assist in meeting legislative goals by creating policy proposals and working with government agencies and local community members.
- Assist in securing funding for Florida Poly initiatives and promote policy positions on behalf of Florida Poly as well as the State University System Board of Governors as directed. Additionally, the position will serve as the primary point of contact for Florida Poly’s federal advocacy initiatives. Position requires significant travel, primarily during Florida’s annual legislative session.
- Assist in the development and expansion of relationships in the state legislature and state administration.
- Educate legislators on policy positions of Florida Poly and the State University System Board of Governors.
- Advocate for funding of Florida Poly initiatives at the state level as directed.
- Monitor actions of key legislative committees.
- Promote awareness of Florida Poly's accomplishments at state and federal levels.
- Plan campus visits, recognitions, and special events for government officials and other constituents; coordinate and facilitate special functions/events activities planning; plan recognitions; develop relationships with government officials, legislative/Congressional staff.
- Expand and maintain Florida Poly’s relationships at the federal level, including Congress and district staff.
- At the request of the Provost may support research faculty by obtaining letters of support for federal grants from Congressional members and coordinating informational meetings in district and in DC.
- Maintain current knowledge and report on federal activities impacting higher education policy and Florida Poly specifically
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of legislative updates to key stakeholders.
- Develop relationships with key state agencies and maintain a working relationship as the primary liaison with the State University System and Board of Governors.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated success in a role with a tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated partnerships with elected officials, state agencies, and staff over time.
- Strong existing relationships with current legislators and key members both in and out of Central Florida legislative districts.
- Demonstrated drive to solve problems in a team environment with high energy and a positive attitude.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and excellent relationship-building skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Solid analytical skills and ability to develop recommendations for positions on matters facing the campus.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and six years of experience directly related to the job functions; or a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and eight years of experience directly related to the job functions.
- Experience and successful track record in a legislative setting with growing responsibility for analysis and initiating strategic action.
- Experience and knowledge of state and federal government funding and legislative processes.
- Experience working with local, state, and federal elected officials and related political considerations.
In addition to the minimum qualifications:
Five (5) years experience directly lobbying the Florida State Legislature.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.
- This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is salary exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; however, frequent travel is required, which may include weekends and evenings.
TARGET HIRING SALARY: $100,000 - $120,000 commensurate with experience.
